Laguna Beach got its initial fame as an artists colony and in the 1920's saw many prominent artists open studios. Today many art galleries still dot the community and when Summer comes Laguna Beach hosts several special artistic events. The biggest three are the Sawdust Festival, Art-a-fair and The Pageant of the Masters.
The Sawdust Art & Craft Festival runs from the end of June to Memorial Day weekend usually. The festival features booths of artists displaying their work, entertainment, food stalls and you can watch some artists plying their craft live.
Art-a-fair features artists displaying their work, art workshops and nightly entertainment from top local performers.
The Pageant of the Masters is part of the larger Festival of the Arts and is one of the most visually stunning events you've even seen. Live actors recreate classic paintings. The actors take their place, the curtain opens and the actors hold the pose while a professional orchestra performs. It is impossible to describe, it has to be seen to be believed, but a photo taken of the "picture" on stage is almost indistinguishable from the original painting.
The Festival of Arts also holds shows, art competitions, workshops and lectures.
Throughout the Summer there are smaller, weekend art shows, beach volleyball and basketball tournaments, wine festivals and the annual July 4th Fireworks from Main Beach.
