Laguna Beach - family trip - water activities in late March?

Family of 4 trying to put together a water based vacation in late March (Hawaii too expensive!). Thoughts about Laguna Beach as a destination - kayak rentals, whale watching, other beach activities (we are not scuba divers)?

Other fun things to do in/around the area?

thank you so much for thoughts and suggestions.

The ocean is way too cold for swimming in in March. Have you looked at Cabo?

Whale watching, kayaking, SUP, etc can be done out of Newport Beach, The Newport Aquatics Center has all kinds of sports for on the water,

There are Top Questions in the Laguna Beach Forum that have some things to do and then the Orange County Forum, one level up has Top Questions on hikes, museums, sights, etc.

Laguna Beach is a great little beach town. You can go to nearby Dana Point for your whale watching. Newport and Huntington Beach are close by if you want to explore those areas also. :)

You won't want to be in the water for longer than ten minutes or so without a wetsuit. It's only a few degrees warmer than the water in San Francisco—54ºF average in San Francisco and 58ºF in Laguna Beach. If you want to go swimming you'll need to head further south, or to the west side of the ocean where the current brings warmer water up from the equator (currents north of the equator run clockwise).

Well, looking at the Souhern California Coastline, I would look at the following for a family trip, heading north to south...

Long Beach has a lot of popular tourist attractions, a harbor and easy access with the free Passport Bus system.

www.visitlongbeach.com

Huntington Beach is great for the rental equpment and a beach with waves, but no boat launching in the area.

www.surfcityusa.com

The Balboa Pier area of Newport Beach has a lot of what you are looking for.

visitnewportbeach.com/vacations/balboa-penin…

The Oceanside/Carlsbad area of Northern San Diego County probably is the best area on a budget.

www,.visitcarlsbad.com

www.visitoceanside.org

And then the Pacific Beach/Mission Beach area of San Diego.

www.sandiego.org

So I would compare the areas, see what interests the entire family, and price out the costs.

Good luck with your planning.

In general ware will be too cold and weather is VERY unpredictable during March. Our Spring breaks out usually spent in Mexico. Balboa Is a great little place for kayak rentals, stand up boards, bikes a long the boardwalk between Newport & Balboa piers, with a stop by Ruby's diner on the end of the pier for lunch.

Tide pools in Laguna are wonderful . More suited to kids then Laguna March swimming.

Also check out Victoria beach w/real "castle" (cool depending on kids ages).

You might think of the Palm Springs area for spring break. Weather is warm, resorts have water slides. Splastophia at the Omni, public water parks with lots of activities, Boomtown, all activities fun for kids.

We live at the beach, and head to the desert for spring break because the ocean is too cold in March for swimming.
