Camping in the Julian/Palomar area in March?

We are driving from Sunland (north-east of LA) to Anza Borrego on a Friday, camping overnight, viewing wildflowers, and then driving through Julian on Saturday afternoon and then returning home on Sunday. I would like somewhere beautiful and safe to camp with my 7 year old - anywhere between Julian to Palomar would be great. Any suggestions?

One question I had - how long does it take to drive S7? I was not sure if it would add too much time to our trip and if it was worth the detour just to camp.

I would rather not go south to Cuyamaca, if possible, given that we will need to head north again the next day.

Thank you for your help!
