Santa Monica is a medium-sized city with shopping malls, high-rise hotels and office buildings. Hermosa Beach, while, technically, a small city -- is really a 'beach town'. Most shops are little 'mom & pop' establishments, the hotels are small and so are the office buildings (2 or 3 stories -- at most!). The streets are narrow with few traffic lights. You'll see surfers walking barefoot carrying their boards to or from the beach; an occasional bus, no big trucks... Get the idea?

It depends - Hermosa has more of a small beach town feel even though its very much in the massive LA metro area. Santa Monica is more of a "big city meets the beach" area. The other question is convenience to other parts of the city if you're planning to sight see elsewhere - Santa Monica is generally more central to most of the touristy areas.

It's a nice city, I have lived in Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach, in Hermosa parking is difficult and the city makes a very large percentage of its' budget from parking ticket revenue so just keep an eye on the meter. Not too many motels there only one on the beach, nice but expensive. If you are looking at a private rental, make sure it comes with a garage or a parking space.

I was wondering how you picked Hermosa, out of the three sister SoBay beach cities of Manhattan, Hermosa or Redondo to stay at?

Hermosa has the same beautiful beach as the other cities, and there is a pedestrian block at Pier Ave, the center of the city. There are bars and outdoor restaurants that have a party atmosphere for the young crowd almost every evening of the week, after 9 PM. Up until then it's fine to walk around and have a meal. The pier is closed for 6 months remodeling.

A great place to stay is the Beach House Inn, just a block north of the Hermosa pier.

You can take a stroll to the MB Pier, about 2 miles away on the Strand, or rent a bike to ride any portion of the 22 mile bike path.

Manhattan Beach is a charming little town, the pearl of the bay! There is a Roundhouse at the end of the pier where there is a Marine Lab. There are many boutique shops and lots of restaurants from Mama D's to The MB Post set in the old 1926 post office. Outdoor cafe's and coffee shops on every block. There is the Manhattan Village Mall on the highway for more shopping. Easy to get to the freeways if you want to visit other sites in LA.

Something for everyone in MB:

The nicest hotel in the downtown area of MB is the Shade Hotel, with roof top pool deck.

Better priced, is the Sea View Inn, with Penthouse rooms with balconies, kitchens, free parking and use of their bikes.
