Downtown Healdsburg vs Downtown Napa vs Sonoma Plaza

Returning to wine country 9/26-10/03. Have stayed a few blocks off Sonoma plaza in the past, and loved the convenience of walking to restaurants and tasting rooms. Would Downtown Napa or Downtown Healdsburg offer similar charm and conveniences? Any pros or cons to each? Thanks in advance.

The Healdsburg Plaza is definitly a great place, very charming and convienent to the wine country, and it is less congested than the Napa downtown. There are several great lodging options right on the square, including Hotel Healdsburg, Healdsburg Inn on the Plaza, Haydon Street and Camellia Inn, to name a few. There is also a number of tasting rooms, and wonderful restaurants in the Healdsburg Plaza, as well as fantastic shopping options.

If you've never been to Healdsburg, I would definintly recommend a trip here. The Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley and Russian River Valley all meet in the town of Healdsburg, with a number of wonderful wineries to choose from. There is also kayaking or canoeing on the Russian River, and we are a 40 minute drive to Armstrong Redwood Park.

There is definintly more small town charm in Healdsburg VS Napa, which is a much faster paced town.

I would be happy to help with any other questions or recommendations!

Not certain if you've already booked - you likely have but each area has it's charms - we have stayed in all three areas. In the past people have nay sayed downtown Napa because there was nothing there much - but now, it's booming and everything, including about 20 tasting rooms, and at least two new hotels, is close at hand. However, it does not have the "quaint" or "charm" factor of Healdsburg or Sonoma if that is what you specifically seek - but it is imminently walkable...

Having said that, the Healdsburg area is beautiful and the downtown area is charming - much more "country charm" and quaintness (like the Sonoma Plaza, but a bit more upscale) and there are several hotels around the town square (Les Mars, Hotel Healdsburg, to name a few - TA has the scoop on all of the hotels if you just look under Healdsburg)..

And you already know about the Sonoma town area. Happy to provide other recommendations if you still need them!

We love spending time in Healdsburg and have enjoyed stays at both the Hotel Healdsburg and the Inn @ the Plaza. There are several nice tasting rooms around the Plaza, we especially liked the Kendall-Jackson tasting room. Willi's Seafood & Raw Bar and Cyrus are in this area, two very good restaurants.

I hope you enjoy your time in the wine country! :)

If you like bed and breakfasts, definitely stay in Napa and you can walk to restaurants, etc.

Healdsburg - this place has really changed in the last 20 years so its trendy, upscale, and in many cases expensive. Its a lot more upscale than Sonoma. Hotel Healdsburg (expensive) is at a good location if the budget allows.

I didn't follow the logic of the last writer..".if you like B & B's definitely stay in Napa"? There are fabulous B & B's in Healdsburg...it's a wonderful town to visit for the wine, the restaurants, the shopping and the gorgous plaza...

I follow mini's logic - Napa is more known for their B&B's - Healdsburg does have some where you can walk to downtown. Napa has about 15 or more in the downtown area alone where you can walk to world class restaurants, shops, etc.. Plus there are about the same number of tasting rooms in downtown Napa- a wine lovers dream come true!

That may be true but it is also true for Healdsburg where there are as many B & B's plus world class dining and shopping plus at least 24 wineries in walking distance...not to mention the fabulous plaza and the Downtown Creamery...
