Planning first time visit to wine country!

We're going to take about 3 days to drive up the PCH/Highway 1 from LA to SF and then will have a day and a half for the wine country. This is our first time so we don't really know what to do.

We enjoy wine, but don't know that much about it. Please reply with recommendations of the top 4-5 wineries to see for a first timer. We're probably more interested in the scenery and memorable experiences than the high quality of the wine.

We're staying in Sonoma (Gohert Park area) but would be willing to travel around.

How about a fantastic, medium priced restaurant?

Lastly, has anyone done the mud baths?

Thank you in advance for the replies,

Mark

The Healdsburg area is a wondreful location at the north end of Sonoma County, and will be maybe a 45 minute drive from the town of Sonoma, but definetly a great spot to see, and we have some fantastic wineries up here.

In the Dry Creek Valley, Ferrari Carano has beautiful gardens worth visiting, and near by Bella Vineyards has their tasting room in their wine caves which is a really neat experience. If you were interested in maybe an educational tour, Michel-Schlumberger does a great job (tours at 11:00a.m. and 2:00p.m daily).

Also in this area, Passalacqua is another beautiful location which has great picnic grounds, and is just down the street from the Dry Creek General Store, a great place to pick up lunch.

If you have the time, I believe you would really enjoy a quick trip up to Healdsburg.

For wineries in Sonoma: Gundlach-Bundschu, Ravenswood, Buena Vista and Bartholomew Park are a few of our favorites. girl and the fig or Cafe La Haye are both great choices for meals in Sonoma.

For the mud baths, go to Indian Springs Resort in Calistoga. You will have use of the great thermal pool until 5:00 with a spa treatment, you may want to make your appointement early to take advantage of the pool. Have fun! :)
