One of California's finest wineries is near Fresno. It's Ficklin Vineyards. They produce superb port. You need to make advance reservations to tour but the tasting room is open daily:
I would look at Milla Vineyards, Engleman, Lomac and Yribarren Vineyards. They are roughly in the same area west of Fresno.
Plan a stop at Cedar View about 25-30 minutes east of Fresno (just off Highway 180 to Kings Canyon NP).
Cedar View's 2009 Zinfandel won a 4 star Gold Medal at this year's Orange County Fair Wine Competition. Only 35 wines received 4 star Golds out of the 4,000 wines judged. They have also received gold and silver medals at several statewide competitions this year for their Syrah, Cabernet, Alicante Bouschet, and Tempranillo.
There are several wine trails in the Fresno/Madera area. You can get more details about the trails at these links.
Agree with Supercilious, Ficklin does a great port. Quady Winery has some very good dessert wines. FresnoFacts gave you some good links to follow.
We like Engelmann Cellars. Brett was very helpful with our questions when we made our first Syrah in 2004. Excellent wines and friendly staff here. Have fun! :)
Syrahgirl, do you have a winery? Send me a PM if you do -- I'd like to know about it. We have a wine group that loves good syrah/shiraz. Big fans of Cayuse and Linne Calodo, and one of our group occasionally pulls out a Grange from his cellar when we've been mellowed by an evening of good food and wine.
Grand Cru tasting on Ave 20 in Chowchilla is pretty nice.
