Tioga Pass to Tenaya Lodge

Putting this trip together at the last minute (early September 2006). What is the drive time between the eastern entrance of Yosemite (via Tioga Pass) and Tenaya Lodge? Lodging inside the park isn't plentiful and Tenaya is probably our best bet at this late date. If we do stay here, how bad is it to "commute" into Yosemite each day? Thank you!

The drive from Tenaya into the Valley floor is about an hour, however, it is a beautiful drive. We have often gone up last minute and stayed at Tenaya. From the 120 entrance to the Valley is over 2 hours, even more if you stop along the way has it is almost impoosible not to as you have so many beautiful pull outs).

Thanks for your reply! Nice to have some idea of how long it will be to transverse the park from the east entrance to Tenaya Lodge. I am hoping that we can snag a last minute reservation inside Yosemite, but will plan things from Fish Camp. Cheers!

Have never been to Yosemite or the Tenaya Lodge. The Ahwahnee would be my first choice as we're driving in from the eastern entrance and its location would be a better fit logistically, but the Tenaya looks lovely. Looking forward to it! Did you find it easy to get in/out of Yosemite each day? With only two nights our time is minimal, but we'll do as much as we can! Read that the Yosemite Lodge is 'the' place for lunch and the Ahwahnee for dinner. True? As far as Tenaya is concerned, is there a section of the hotel to request at time of booking? Thanks!

It sounds like you would really like to stay in the valley. Before you book your Tenaya Lodge stay check to see if last minute cancellations have freed up rooms in the valley. Here's a link to the official concessionaire for Yosemite:

On your way in on 120 stop at the Tioga Gas Station. Inside is the super delish Whoa Nellie Deli. Grea tfor lunch. I personally think that the Yosemite Lodge dining room is good for breakfast. Other meals are quite mediocre. The Mountain Room is very good food but it's moire fine dining than the cafeteria style Lodge dining. Ahwahnee is very good for both lunch and dinner.

When we drove from Mammoth to Fish Camp for our stay at the Tenaya Lodge we stopped for lunch at a spot in the valley near the Merced River. Nobody was there but us and some yellow jackets which are common during the summer. By the time we were underway to Fish Camp the kids were quite tired of the winding roads and begged for it to be over. It was quite a relief to arrive at the Tenaya Lodge, which is very nice. If you can, it's best not to make the drive all in one day unless no one has any issues with car sickness. Since we live in CA we did not make the trip back into the valley from the Tenaya Lodge. We enjoyed the sights at the south end of the park.

Thanks for the input! Read about the Whoa Nellie Deli - sounds unique and will certainly be a stop for us. Tentatively our plan is to drive from Las Vegas to Death Valley, spend the night in Bishop (with a stop at Schatt's Bakery before heading out), continuing the next morning to Yosemite via the Tioga Pass. Won't linger in Death Valley due to summer temps, but figure it will be an interesting drive. As we're entering Yosemite from the east, staying in the Valley would be best, but, as this trip is so last minute, I understand availability at the choicest places will probably remain nil. I will keep checking, though, to see if anything opens up at the eleventh hour! Thanks again.

You might want to confirm that Tioga pass road is still open during your trip. It closes early in the fall and does not reopen until late in the Spring.

Tioga Pass would not be closed in early Sept as the OP stated that is when they will be going.
