Eureka vs Trinidad

We are planning a Road Trip in July from Seattle to San Francisco. We are two adults and two children (5 and 7). We plan to stay one night in Florence, Oregon and drive south along Hwy 101 to California. I have read such nice things about Eureka and Trinidad that I don't know where to stay. Our original plan was staying in Eureka, but I've read in other forums that Trinidad is also a good option. I appreciate any advise on which one is the most "kid friendly" and I am open for suggestions of any other option I haven't considered. Also any advise about road conditions in summer, things to do and see is welcome.

Hi and welcome to TripAdvisor. You may wish to also post on the Oregon Coast forum:

Florence is slightly inland and is a long drive from Seattle in one day.

Eureka and Trinidad are totally and completely different. Trinidad is very small (about 300 pop), very picturesque, very quiet. Eureka is about 30,000 population, the largest town in far northern Calif with many stores, restaurants, motels - everything that makes up a sizable town. They are only 20-25 minutes apart.

What kind of lodging are you looking for and what type of vacation experience do you want?

Some things to do along the northern Calif coast:

Go to Trinidad if you want views and the beach. Go to Eureka for Old Town shopping, and the Victorian homes. BTW we stayed at Abigail's Elegant Victorian Inn and loved it (mmm, not sure how kid friendly it is, lots of antiques and such, might want to ask them first)
