Safety at night

Hi all,

Just wanting to check out the safety of the area, we'll be staying at the Doubletree westside on a 24 stop over to NYC from Australia. We were hoping to spend most of that time probably in Santa Monica. What kind of things should we be careful of whilst visiting the area in the evening ie looking for a place to eat? Does it get dangerous after a certain time/are there places we should avoid in general. I understand crime etc can be anywhere, but just would like to know if there are particular things we should be wary of.

Thanks in advance

Will you have a car? The area is safe, for the most part but it's not the greatest place to walk -- only because there is lots of automobile traffic on both of the intersecting streets that are adjacent to the hotel. If you are 'on foot', there are 2 major shopping malls that are within a 10 minute walk of the hotel. Each has a number of dining options plus there is a handful of restaurants in the neighborhood. If you're driving, then you have lots and lots of options for dining in all directions.

Thanks Hop, we won't have a car so will be relying on walking and taxi. Should we aim to be back at the hotel earlier rather than later?

Not especially. The area is fine. It's a crossroads of a sort so you won't see many other pedestrians but you'll see lots of cars whizzing by. It's a well lit neighborhood -- I used to live a mile from the hotel -- and it's perfectly safe. It's just not that interesting.

If you're really worried about it, you could call for a taxi after visiting one of the malls but the taxi ride would take only 1 or 2 minutes. Kind of silly.
