Wine country--where to stay? Visit winery or tasting rooms?

Hi-- I live in the SF area and wanted to do a weekend trip to the Monterey/Carmel area with some guests in a few weeks. We've been before, but the purpose of the trip would be to check out the wineries in the region, which we have never done.

I would LOVE any advice as to whether to stay in "downtown" Monterey or Carmel and drive to the wineries each day, or whether it is better to stay further east in the Valley or somewhere else. Time is tight since this is a last minute trip, so I am not sure what is still available at this point, but we are pretty open on location -- we just want to stay wherever it makes the most sense for winery trips.

Also, is it common to visit the wineries and do the tastings there, or do you go into town to tasting rooms more often? I would prefer the former, but wasn't sure.

Thank you!
