Sardine Factory's menu is more old-school fine dining (with prices to match) and a grand dining room aura. Passionfish is a more casual setting and modern California fusion cuisine. The food is wonderful at both places -- just depends on what sounds good to you. Great wine lists, too. Sardine Factory had a Wine Spectator Grand Award at one time; still very good with classic vintages. Passionfish's list is more eclectic with a good representation of "cult" wines and lesser-known but very interesting bottles. Passionfish prices are just barely over retail. Sardine Factory has a more conventional markup.

The Sardine Factory opened in 1968 and has had the same ownership since then. It is much more formal & expensive than Passionfish.

The "bar scenes" from "Play Misty for Me" were filmed there.

Passionfish is the the much better bet.
