Length of stay in Carmel

How is the traffic in the Carmel/Monterey area? Easy to drive in?

We are planning a visit in Feb. or March and the length is flexible. Is 5 days too long?

Thanks so much! Judy

The area is easy to drive in. Spend as much time as possible in this beautiful area of the CA coast! :). www.carmelcalifornia.com.

Just don't come between Feb 6-12 as this is when the AT&T Pro Am takes place and hotel rates will be over inflated.

Monterey, Carmel & Pacific Grove are all within minutes of each other and it's pretty easy to get around the Monterey Peninsula. However, there are certain times of the day when traffic can be heavy. most notably the morning and afternoon commute.

There is a lot to see/do on the Monterey Peninsula. 5 days would be a dream come true for this girl. I'm sure you'll love it there.

Just a few things to see/do:

Monterey Bay Aquarium

Cannery Row

Carmel by the Sea/Beach

Point Lobos State Reserve

Carmel Valley (Wine tasting?)

Big Sur (Bixby Bridge, Pfeiffer Beach, Nepenthe, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park/McWay Falls)

Day trip to San Simeon for a tour at Hearst Castle

Traffic-wise, February and March don't see a lot of tourists, so traffic is pretty smooth (with a few minor exceptions at rush-hour). Local streets, particularly in downtown Monterey, can be kinda quirky, though, so getting around can be a little confusing in some places. Carmel's streets are laid out in a simple grid pattern, and is the easiest town to navigate (except for the trees in the middle of the streets). Here's a humorous and somewhat practical guide to navigating the area from my website: www.montereypeninsula.info/guide/driving.htm

Five days would be great. There's a lot to do here. We have several beautiful beaches and parks, lots of interesting shopping, art galleries, a large assortment of historic sites, museums, restaurants, wineries, numerous venues for live entertainment, and various recreational opportunities. Oh, and there's that aquarium thing, but everybody knows about that. (Sometimes it seems as if that's the ONLY thing people know about.) Enjoy your visit.
