1 day in Carmel. What should we do? Where should we eat?

Hi TA, could use your help please.

My girlfriend and I will have from 12n - 5p the next day (About 29 hours) in Carmel, early September.

We are staying at La Play Carmel by the Sea.

Any suggestions on where we should eat, places we should go, things we should do, during our short stay?

Thanks in advance!

What are your interests? What kind of food do you like? Are you looking for suggestions right in Carmel or the surrounding area? Where are you coming from and where are you going next?

South of Carmel is Point Lobos State Reserve. You can also continue south along Hwy 1 and see the 26 mile section that's open down to the northern end of Big Sur Village.

In Carmel, there's Carmel Beach at the end of Ocean Ave and the walking path along Scenic Rd that runs along the bluff above the beach. There's Carmel River State Beach which is a series of beaches between Carmel and Point Lobos. Downtown Carmel has shops, restaurants, galleries and wine tasting rooms.

La Playa is very nice! Have a meal at L'Escargot, we dined there a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed it. Casanova, Bouchee, Little Napoli and Grasings are some other very good places to dine in Carmel. ⛱

What are your interests? we like to take in local places, craft cocktails, people watch, good food & coffee.

What kind of food do you like? Any and all, particularly interested in area specific.

Are you looking for suggestions right in Carmel or the surrounding area? - we don;t want to waste time driving, so probably right in Carmel.

Where are you coming from and where are you going next? - From SF, then back to SF for a Red Eye Flight back to the east coast.

Monterey County is a big wine growing region and quite a few Carmel restaurants only have wine/beer licenses. You may want to check out the newly opened 7th & Dolores (I haven't been yet) https://www.7dsteakhouse.com/ Another place that I've been and can vouch for the food is Cultura http://www.culturacarmel.com/ though the food is Oaxaca influenced so not really Monterey specific. Here is a 1 day I would enjoy:

1) French Bakery in Morning - Lafayette Bakery

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Revie…

2) Drive south to Point Lobos. Its easier to get a parking spot in morning. Once the lots are full, its one car in, one car out.

3) I'd then drive south to see Big Sur area (you will see some of the iconic Big Sur views).

4) On the way back from Big Sur, enjoy lunch at Ragged Point with Pacific Ocean views.

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Revie…

5) Drive back to hotel - explore the art gallery and shopping district of Carmel enjoying the winery tasting rooms.

6) Explore 17 mile drive - stopping for the bag pipes and cocktail at Spanish Bay.

Drive through and see the Restless Ocean and other ocean view areas, the Lone Cypress, sea animals, The Ancient Forest, and Pebble Beach Lodge Resort.

7) End the Drive for drinks at a of Mission Ranch Restaurant and enjoy cocktails.

7) Decide if you want to dine there (reservations are not accepted but you can put them in when you arrive) or go back to Carmel and dine at one of the amazing restaurants there. (several).

Mini means Rocky Point Restaurant not Ragged Point.

Looks like you're younger so ....

If it's sunny and you like Mexican food, Baja Cantina is fun. It's popular though. You may have a wait.

Hi - We only spent an afternoon / early evening there last September but loved it.

Hogs breath inn ( formerly owned by Clint Eastwood ) is worth a visit with nice selection of beers.

Charming wine bars in the centre.

One thing a local kept saying we should do is go down to beach & watch the sunset. We went down to beach and found lots of others just sat there watching the sun going down, Really was stunning and I really think it's a must do .
