Capitola or Santa Cruz

We are planning to visit in October and debating whether to stay in Capitola or Santa Cruz for several days. We are retired and want to enjoy the ocean, sea life, dining, shopping, wineries, and State Parks. Any advice?

Either is nice. For example, in Capitola,. There are some very nice state parks there -

They are right next door to each other - minutes drive from each other - so either works.

New Brighton is a really nice state park in Capitola

Natural Bridges state park is close to several of the wineries in Santa Cruz. With a car, you might want to explore the Monterey area wineries as well as the Santa Cruz Mountain wineries as well.

Let us know what type of place you want to stay at and budget - that might help us further on what would be best.

Both areas are very nice - and better yet, they are both next to each other so short drive. So, it might be best to let us know what type of place you would like to stay at (note we assume you have a car - but if not the case, let us know that too.) thanks.

We enjoy both places. We have stayed at The Venetian and the Fairfield Inn in Capitola. The Shadowbrook Inn restaurant is not to miss there.

Happy Travels! :)

You might also look at Aptos (I spent many a summer day at the beach at Rio del Mar.) Seascape Resort is nice.

Santa Cruz is a larger town and has the Beach Boardwalk which is very bustling in summer with kids and young people. You may be looking for that or something quieter.

What sort of accommodation are you looking for? Hotel? Motel? Holiday rental?

Puter the local DE and PGDenizen will give you the best advise. They are neighboring towns but Capitola has a very small shopping a d restaurant area compared to SC which is much bigger and has more things going on. If you are looking for a quiet town then Capitola, SC is more vibrant and busy They are both nice

If you want to be near the water, Capitola, the village, doesn't have many choices. The Venetian is a kind of funky combo cottages-for-rent and long term rentals. The Inn at Depot Hill is very nice and you can walk to the village from there. ($$$$) The Fairfield Inn is off 41st Avenue, not in the village.

If you are interested in a very nice hotel with Bay views look at the Dream Inn, across from the Santa Cruz Wharf. Every room has a balcony or patio facing the Bay. It is pricey. Next door is the smaller Sea and Sand Inn. Across West Cliff Drive, on a slight hill, also with views, look at the Seaway Inn, less costly.

The Adobe on Green is a nice bed and breakfast within walking distance of downtown.

Whether you stay in Santa Cruz or Capitola, the state parks, shopping, restaurants, and wineries are not far away. You will have more choices on shopping and dining in Santa Cruz, of course.

Here is a traveler article to give you an idea of what is here to see and do in Santa Cruz.....

If you are interested in a vacation rental, try Bailey Properties. They have the most vacation rental properties. There are small beach cottages near the small craft harbor and near the beach north of there.

Another vote for Seascape. It's not far from Capitola. I love that you can have a fire on the beach and the hotel will send down s'mores fixings and firewood for you.

Seascape is lovely, just so you know you will need to drive to outside restaurants, shopping, parks, wineries, etc.

Speaking of wineries, there are so many spread out all over Santa Cruz, you may want to try the Corralitos Wine Trail where there are a handful of lovely wineries on a short road.

We stayed at Seascape and were not very impressed with the rooms. Even tho we were in a spa suite room it was a bit dated. They do have a nice restaurant, Sanderlings that we enjoyed. :)

I think syrahgirl may have Seascape Resort confused with the Seacliff Inn, also in Aptos, but essentially a motel.
