We have been invited to a wedding on June 9th in Capitola. Can anyone give me recommendations on the following two places to stay. Capitola Venetian or Capitola Hotel.
I live in the area and have not heard of nor seen a "Capitola Hotel". Could you mean the "Capitola Inn"?
The Venetian is charming...built in the 1920's, probably, at the mouth of Soquel Creek. The units have Bay views and are painted in different colors. It seems quite European. I have not stayed there, but friends like it.
Do a google on this and on "Capitola Inn", if that is the property to help you make up your mind. capitola Inn is more modern and, I think, does not have Bay Views.
I have already looked at the web pages.
capitolahotel.com and capitolavenetian.com.
How far is it from the San Jose airport and I understand there is limited parking spaces.
To get to Capitola from the San Jose airport you will take Highway 17 over the Coast Range, summit is 1800 feet. The road is curvy for a few miles, but is four lane divided. When you get to Santa Cruz, you take Hwy 1, marked "Watsonville" south to Bay Avenue in Capitola. (There are three Capitola exits.) Follow Bay Avenue down and there you are, at either location. To get to Venetian turn right at the first intersection in town, and cross the Stockton Street Bridge. I am not sure exactly where the other place is.
We can get to SJC in half an hour, but we live north of Santa Cruz. I would say 45 minutes or so. There is major construction on Highway 1, however, so if you are coming during a commuter time, you will be delayed and very frustrated.
I would be very interested in the venue of the wedding, since there are quite a few questions on this forum about locations for weddings in the area.
I know the Venetian looks "funky", but if I didn't live here i would stay there, just for the charm.
I have not stayed at either but walked by them a lot. The Capitola Hotel is new but small ,right on the Espanade (main road) in Capitola Village. Due to its location, might be noisy and parking is a problem. The Venetian rooms are closer to the ocean, at the beach so the waves should drown out a lot of traffic noise - plus very unique and cute. You might also want to check out the Harbor Lights Motel, next t to the Venetian. It's an older place, but has balconies facing the beach and my family has stayed there and had no problems. It's more affordable than your other choices. Check out Harborlightsmotel.net.
Mandy, thank you so much for the information. I will check out Harbor Lights.
Try the Inn at Depot Hill in Capitola.
Okay, you might get a bit of sticker shock when you look at the prices on the website, but every time we stayed there, including June 2006 we got a 50 percent off deal.
We have stayed there twice and will definitely stay there again. It is just 2 blocks or so up the hill from the beach.
Way comfy bed, such yummy breakfasts, wonderful staff and service.
Thanks Enorah. I looked at the website. How did you arrange the 50% off deal? Was it offered to you before you went or after you stayed there?
I called and asked if they were offering any specials. You know, actually I think they listed it as the "innkeeper's Special" or something like that on the "Special offers" page. I just looked and did not see it there but would ask for it.
Good luck and have so much fun!
Mandy, are you still with me. At the Harbor Lights which room is the best to stay in. Our Bride and Groom are staying at the Capitola Hotel. How far are they from Harbor Lights?
Harbor Lights is about a two minute walk to the Capitola Hotel. Capitola Village itself is only three blocks long and two blocks wide. It's been about 5-6 years since one our relatives stayed at the Harbor Lights - I don't remember the rooms they stayed in. The hotel owners were very helpful though, they said some rooms had a very small shower - I explained my dad had special needs and needed a larger bathroom, and they booked that room for us. I do remember they had a king or queen bed, - it was not one of those nice pillow-top beds the newer hotels offer, unless they upgraded. Just standard mattress, kitchenette, small eating table, like a card table, small balcony on the same plane as your fellow hotel guests.
What I notice is a lot of seemingly nice families staying there sitting on the balcony. I asked one family how they liked it and they said, they love coming here and stay at the Harbor Lights every year. There is one off-street parking space. You can walk to a lot of places from Capitola Village. Also about 1 mile away is a newer hotel, The Best Western on 41st Ave. Not on the beach, but if your in good shape you can walk there.
