L.A. to Monterey then to Yosemite National Park

I am traveling with my husband to California for his birthday. We will be staying in L.A. for two days then head north on Hwy 1 to Monterey where we will then head inland towards Yosemite National Park. I am trying to figure out the best place to spend the night around Hearst Castle or just past it. I am also trying to figure out where the best place would be to spend the night maybe an hour or two outside of Yosemite. Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated! We would like to stay around $100/nt if possible.

For the night on the coast, look at Cambria or San Simeon... There are motels in both. You can also consider the San Luis Obispo area... there is very little available north of San Simeon and Hearst Castle until you reach Monterey. You will find California motel prices along the coast may push your $100 per night goal.

On your way into Yosemite, you will need to choose from either Highway 140 (the "all weather highway" along the river, or Highway 120, the Big Oak Flat road. Is this going to be your place for Yosemite? If so try El Portal just outside the park gate on Highway 140 (accessible from 120 so either road is possible)

If a stop before the park, then, Maraposa on Highway 140 has a lot of choices. On 120 you can stay at Oakdale (a couple of hours out,) or somewhere in Big Oak Flat - Groveland - Buck Meadows, maybe an hour out of the park.

Where are you going from Yosemite? It might affect how you enter and where you might want to stay. If headed back to LA, you can exit the Fresno road (probably fastest route back) or Tioga Pass (over the Sierras) then head back via the desert.

With a few more details we can get you more information.

Your best lodging options near Hearst Castle in/around your $100 budget include, Motel 6 in San Simeon (Used to be a Holiday Inn, so a bit nicer than your typical Motel 6), Bluebird Inn (Cambria), Creekside Inn (Cambria), Cambria Palms.

Here is the direct link to the Yosemite forum: tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g61000-i315 Read the Top Questions in the upper right of that page for lodging ideas inside and outside the Park. If you have enough time, you might want to enter via Hwy 41 / South Entrance and Mariposa Grove.

RandyHees: We are only spending the day in Yosemite to see a few highlight points and then headed on to San Francisco that evening. Do you have a suggested route to take to get to Yosemite with that in mind?
