Cambria or San Simeon?

Looking at staying 1 night in San Simeon at the Best Western Cavalier, but also read reviews about Cambria. Which is a better place. Like the beach but we are just staying 1 night and then continuing along the coast to LA so only really want to see the main sites worth visiting.

I would recommend staying in Cambria - it's a charming and picturesque little town with a good selection of restaurants. We stayed at the Bluebird Inn in Cambria - good value, a clean spacious room, and a good location. San Simeon is definitely worth a stop - besides Hearst Castle, there is also a fascinating sea lion colony nearby.

We also always stay in Cambria at one of the quaint Inns along Moonstone Beach Drive. If you want oceanfront, the Cavalier is the place for you, in Cambria you will have to walk across the highway to the beach. Even if you stay in San Simeon, Cambria is just a few minutes away where I would definitely suggest you go for meals. Sow's Ear, Robin's, Sea Chest are all excellent. www.centralcoast.com is a fantastic website for this area. Enjoy! :)

San Simeon is basically 2 strips of hotels on each side of Highway 1 with a few shops/restaurants interspersed.

The Best Western Cavalier is the best hotel option in San Simeon.

Cambria is a quaint, charming town nestled in pine trees up to the sea with several charming inns on Moonstone Beach Drive across from a lovely boardwalk that meanders along the shore. Perfect for sunset or early morning walks. The road in front of the hotels/inns is not a highway and very easy to cross.

Cambria has many unique and charming shops for browsing and is a favorite of many travelers that discover this gem along our coast. syrahgirl is right that it's only a short drive from San Simeon if your heart is set on the Cavalier.

We stayed in San Simeon about 10 years ago and spent most of our time in Cambria. Thus I would recommend staying in Cambria and being able to either walk around town if you are at the Bluebird or a quick drive in from Moonstone Beach.

Technically, San Simeon has no hotels. However, San Simeon Acres does. Unfortunately, San Simeon Acres consists entirely of two "strips" of motels off the side of the highway.

Cambria is much nicer. Stay there if your budget allows. If it doesn't, I recommend Cayucos and Morro Bay as far better towns than San Simeon Acres. Cambria, Cayucos, and Morro Bay all have things to offer. San Simeon Acres does not.

Hmmmm..... will San Simeon/San Simeon Acres become the new PCH/Cabrillo Highway/Highway 1 debate?

Nah. I just think the latter may give the former a bad name. Six one way, half a dozen the other. ;)

Aah.. I get your drift.

You are right, of course. When I passed through the REAL San Simeon last month, I wondered if visitors would be confused by our suggestions since there aren't any hotels there. You know.... "Where are those two strips of hotels we've been told about?" Or... "I must be lost. I don't see the Best Western anywhere."

I'll follow your lead and refer to it as San Simeon Acres from now on. Or: San Simeon Acres... The Gateway to Cambria. ;-)

O.K., Can we please call Hearst Castle its' original "La Cuesta Encantada" and maybe call Cambria its' original name "Slab Town"

We like to stay at the Best Western Cavalier because it is right on the beach. We go into Cambria for dining and shopping. I must admit I haven't stayed anywhere in Cambria, but I haven't seen any hotels in Cambria on the beach, either, only across the street from it.
