Cambria good base for Big Sur?

Since lodging options seem to be quite limited in the Big Sur area. We are exploring the possibility of using Cambria as a base for 2-3 nights to explore Big Sur area June or early July 2009. How far is Cambria from Big Sur??

Is this a reasonable stop for hitting the state parks, day hikes, etc?

Any thoughts ?

Thank you

The whole coast from just south of Carmel to about Cambria is considered Big Sur. The majority of the sights and restaurants are located near and around Big Sur Village, which is about 20 minutes south of Carmel.

Cambria is a good hour and a half from many of the sights you'll want to see. It's not far a day trip but you need to take in consideration the driving conditions. It's a road that requires your full attention.

Have you looked at Glen Oaks motel in Big Sur? It's been remodeled and is very nice now. The rates are good too. I'd do 1 night in Cambria and 1 night in Big Sur, if it was me.

Thanks for your thoughts. We think we will do 2 nights in Big Sur area and in night in Cambria or the Morro bay or Cayucas are before heading to Ventura for 2 more nights. We are still very open to suggestions though!
