Day trip from Calistoga

Hi there,

Family of two adults plus three teenagers ,19 ,17 and 13 ,coming to calistoga on 24th july for a week befroe moving onto san fran for three days and then onto carmel for the last week..

Looking to plan two day trips out of calistoga-no more than a 2.5 hr each way.

Sacremento seems to be a no no by all accounts i have read.

Mendocino and a trip on skunk railway seems interesting ...is it?

Also looked at bodega bay and surrounds?

Oter possibility yosemite however ihear it will be phenomenally busy with tours etc.

With relation to wineries ,we will get to see those in between these trips, and have planned same based on excellent feedback in here.

So there we are -what would you do if you had these two day trips available ?

many thanks in advance for all the great help and advice given and about to be given.

Mendocino is our favorite get-a-way spot. Worth seeing, the skunk train takes you to Fort Bragg, not Mendocino. You could walk around Fort Bragg, not quaint like Mendocino. A drive to Armstrong Woods near Guernville would put you in the Redwoods, about a little over an hour from Calistoga. From there you could continue to the coast and see the sea lions in Jenner, on down to Bodega Bay around to Sebastopol (Have ice cream at Scremin Mimi's) and look at the shops. My daughter (19) spends her summer time off at one of the beaches at the Russian River. Not my cup of tea. The town of Healdsburg is about 30 min. from Calistoga and worth a visit. Lots of good places to eat. Diavolo in Geyserville has the best pizza on the planet, not much else there. Not sure what your kids like to do. Not a whole lot of action in the North Bay. Yosemite is way too much for a day trip, and will be over run.

We love to take the ferry to San Francisco...but you'll be there. If you love nature Point Reyes Seashore is beautiful. Lots of hikes. You could kayak on Tomales Bay. We live in the area because of the natural beauty. Good luck planning.

Bodega Bay is nice, we like the Bodega Bay Lodge & Spa there. :)
