Napa Valley Next Weekend

My husband and I are getting away from three kids in CT, the dog, a major construction project, and this sleet in order to go to Napa Valley next weekend for our first visit. We'd love some tips about wineries to visit (or avoid), and some good places for dinner. We're staying at Calistoga Ranch (no negative comments please!) and are pinot noir drinkers...(yes, it happened after Sideways, I have no shame). We'd welcome any words of wisdom on how to make this trip a memorable one. We fly into SF on Thursday night and I leave from SF on Monday a.m. Thanks!

I'd suggest doing one of the following tours:

Mondavi - this is a very good overview tour; its quite informative while also having a nice at table wine tasting experience after the tour.

Jarvis - nice wine cave tour; nice tasting at the end.

Del Dotto - Excellent wine tasting and quite informative about the impact barrels do make on the taste of wine; do this late in the afternoon (3:00 or so if possible) as the wine is wonderful and lots of it. Its a wonderful experience for the 2 of you.

For Top 100 Wineries....the following Napa wineries are in that class for pinot noir, so you might want to include them too...all good ones to visit.

Schramsberg Vineyards in Napa Valley; napavintners.com/auctions/…

Gary Farrell Wines and Merry Edwards Wines in Sonoma County;

(Note: Since Calistoga is on the north end of the Napa Valley it is possible to do a trip to Healdsburg area to go to these two if pinot is at your top top interests:)

Note: It might be one of your last great times to get a bottle of Gary Ferrell Pinot as he has announced that he is moving on to bulid another winery.

With an escape from the dog and three kids, you might enjoy one morning a mud bath experience...something just for the 2 of you to enjoy...

and another day enjoy one of the spa treatments at your hotel...

Lots of great restaurants...check the forum for past posts...

or let us know your taste in foods. So many great restaurants, so little time.

Enjoy your trip.

I would not miss Domaine Carneros in Napa for some really good Pinot Noir. Domaine Chandon in Yountville also makes a nice one that we enjoyed last Fri. before our lunch at Redd.

For an amazing meal, Cyrus in Healdsburg is excellent. You can make reservations on OpenTable, they do require a credit card when you book your reservation.

In Calistoga where you are staying, the Wappo Bar & Bistro has really good food in a less formal ambiance than Cyrus. For another casual meal, Ad Hoc in Yountville is lots of fun and they have very good food. Call to make sure they are serving something you like, they only have one menu for the evening that includes 4 courses. Have fun on your trip! :)
