Bristlecomb pines and gov't shutdown

Is it still possible to visit the Patriarch and Schulman groves to see the bristlecomb pines during this current government shutdown? The roads are all still open?

Thanks

I am guessing that they are not open. The shut-down is as complete as they can make it, with the exception of certain roads that are kept open for through access. like hwys 120 and 140 through Yosemite park, which carry traffic from one side to the other. Since the road to Bristlecone is not a through road, it is doubtless closed. While the rangers in the parks are laid off, there is still security inside the areas to enforce the closure, so I would not suggest going around any barricades. We saw rangers busting people in Yosemite for stopping along the road, which is not allowed.

The USDA is using different strategies in their approach to the shutdown, so it's unclear whether the road is open - but they do have a number you can call to check (or at least, their website, which is still up, says they do):

760-873-2500

It is not a national park. It's at least worth checking. It's State Highway part of the way up there, and you can see some of the trees before you make the turn off to the dirt road (which is probably closed, as it goes to the closed visitor center).

Advice to call is a good one, assuming the recorded message (on the # above) has been updated.

Hwy. 168 over Westgard Pass will be open. I don't remember if there's a gate before you get to the Schuman Grove. There may or may not be a Forest Service ranger patrolling. There certainly was a gate at the Schuman Grove when we were there, and that would prevent you from taking the dirt/graded (and sometimes rough) road on up to the Patriarch Grove. If you're in a rental car you wouldn't want to try that road, anyway. The University of California has a research station higher up on White Mountain, but they may have special clearance. If you're going to be in the area, anyway, you can certainly ask around in Big Pine.

Thanks. The phone number just says they are closed due to the government shutdown. Looks like the last roads needed to get up there will probably be shut.

Maybe next time :(

A big shout out and thanks to our Pres and Congress
