Necessary to book accommodation on Bishop late August?

We are travelling from San Francisco to Las Vegas via Yosemite, Tioga Pass, Highway 395 and Death Valley. We thought we'd stay a night in Bishop on the way and wonder if we will need to book accommodation ahead at that time.

If you know your dates I would book something, if you are particular about where you want to stay. Still very busy up there that time of year.

Thanks dez40 - I had a feeling we should. It would be nice to leave it open so we can drive further before stopping for the night if we want to, but nothing worse than not being able to find somewhere to stay at the end of a long day.
