I just want to share this information with you who does not speak Spanish and does not know how to use local bus in Bavaro area. As of April 2014, there is one road that leads to Majestic Colonial/Elegance Resorts, Royallton Resort and Barcelo Resort. Barcelo Resort is located at the end of the road. The SITRABAPU/ bus goes to the end of the road and turns around to go to Higuey. We waited for the bus at the end of the road. There is a Higuey Sign in front to the bus window, make sure you see that before you get on the bus. It cost 100 peso per person for one way. It takes roughly 1 hour to Higuey and it is a nice ride. We met nice/friendly local folks on the bus. By the way, it is very safe to travel this way. This bus also passes by Hard Rock Cafe Resort. When the bus gets to Higuey, you should not get off at any bus stops unless you know the bus station. In order to go back to your resort, you have to go the the bus station to find your bus line and get on it. In order to remember your bus line, you must remember the color of shirt of the bus driver and conductor. The conductor is the person who collects the bus fare.
Once you get off the bus at the bus station, you need to walk back ward and you can find the local market, the old church and the new church.
We had lunch at at small restaurant next to the local market. We had rice&bean, stewed chicken, stewed pork, fried plaintan, steamed casava, and a bottle of orange fanta. Cost is 140 peso. DR food was very good, service was also very good.
It was a very good experience and I would do it again. DR folks are very nice and kind. Love them.
