Budgeting for Holiday

Visiting Sun'n Sand Resort in two weeks time, can anyone suggest how much spending money to take for extras like the watersports etc. Also is it better to book safari through the tour company or to arrange it once we are there. If anyone can help, would be grateful.

The sun'n sands resort is a huge beach resort in mombasa's kikambala area. Its roughly 45 minutes drive from the mombasa airport, off the extremely rough Mombasa/malindi highway. Karinborkens is right, about 350 USd per person should about cover ur extras. Should u need ATM services, there is one at the barclays bank in the Bamburi area, near the whitesands hotel-thats about 20 minutes taxi ride from the sun'n sands. Further down from the barclays bank is a modern supermarket and more ATM facilities.

Booking safaris is rather confusing as there are so many companies in mombasa offering safaris to virtually every park in the country.I have looked at the wildlife bush adventures site which Karinborkens seems to repeatedly tout for and it looks good. U might need to note that they are however based in the southcoast and you are in the North coast of Kenya. Here are several other safari companies you might want to look at: www.distancetours.com. ,DM safaris,MIC safari-run a google search for their sites, and www.secretsofafrica.com.

Bottom line is there are lots of reliable tour companies in Mombasa, and since the product is largely the same, the deciding factor might be the price. It does pay to book ahead though.

There are always self styled safari sellers at every beach in mombasa, called beach boys, they are friendly chaps, but I would be careful with them. Safari Nzuri.

We have booked our safari to the masai mara with mics and they have seemed very well organised and professional. It has all been done via email and a deposit transferred across from our bank.

We are staying at Governors in July and the cost was £345 each for two days and one night flying from Mombassa.

Hi Grandison,

There is some good advice in these posts. We have been on two safaris with www.southerncross.com and will be going again in two weeks time. They are a great company, manage two of the camps and will if wished tailor your safari to your requirements.

On our first trip to Kenya we spent about £250 each, the following one abvout £225 not including safaris. This year we intend to hire a car for three days with driver/guide to explore Mombasa, Mombasa south and north. It is working out about £42/43 a day fully inclusive. You can negotiate with the taxi drivers outside your hotel for trips much cheaper and better than taking the holiday company trips.

A big advantage is that you decide where you want to go and how long you wish to stay. Last year we did an trip of about 30 miles (a long way on Kenyan roads) stopping at various places just as the mood took us for £15. We were away nearly 5 hours and the taxi driver took us to some places we would not have known about, like small boat builders etc.

I would suggest that you make friends with a particular taxi driver and beach boy (take some t shirts with you as presents) and you will have a ball.
