Mt Yasur

My partner and i are arriving on Tanna Island on tues 22nd of april at 4.10pm and we want to go straight from the airport to My Yasur so we can see it the best time at dusk/evening. how can we organise this? We are staying at Tanna Lodge that night and then fly out the next day. can we hire a driver/guide to do this and then take us to our accommodation?

Tanna Lodge organises tour to Mt Yasur so perhaps contact them and ask directly if they can pick you up and go there directly.

Most tours leave that side of the island at 3pm however as its a rough 1.5hr drive to Mt Yasur and you then have time to get up t the rim as the sun goes down. A tour is probably also cheaper, as you will pay a high price for transport there plus the entry fee to the volcano which tour operators buy in bulk to reduce costs.

Taxis to the volcano from White Grass Resort, Tanna Evergreen Resort, Tanna Lodge and all others from the West coast (airport, city side) will (...should) cost you 12,000 vatu plus entry fees of 3,350 pp so you are better off buying from the resort which range from 12,000 to 9,000 vatu pp including entry fees plus they hire the best taxis (...should) if they are short of their own vehicles. Resort also carry Liability Insurance and have a higher sense of Duty of Care as you are their guests.

Wish it was true that we buy in bulk but regrettably that is not the case we pay the same as everyone even though we bring the bulk of the business to the volcano in addition to paying commissions to travel agents on everything you pre buy from them, so after insurance, government taxes, commissions and other fees (that the majority of taxis do not pay) we more often than not actually lose money taking people to the volcano.

Why do we do it?...simple, we carry the losses in our room revenue and it minimizes complaints that the volcano tour is too expensive!

Hopefully that helps :-)
