Safety / quick trip for a race

I'm thinking about traveling to Caracas in Feb. to run in the CAF Marathon, just as a weekend trip. From what I've read, the race is a big deal and one of the best rated in South America. However...I've also read a lot about how dangerous the city is, is it truly that bad? I'd be a girl traveling alone and have limited spanish skills. Thoughts?

Thanks, all.

Like you, i am from New York and I run. I went to Venezuela for the caf marathon last year. I overslept and missed it, but that is ok. Caracas is kinda scary but I had fun. I stayed at Nelson's place (google it). It's not a 5 star hotel but you should forget luxury and worry about safety. I was the only American I saw at the Marathon expo, so you will be a minority, and it will be interesting

Even if you don't stay at Nelson's place you should contact him for advice and airport pickup and currency exchange. The currency exchange is a nightmare without help from a local.

Message me if you have questions, I did the exact thing you are considering last year, and I was a bit nervous.
