Going to MI Laguna Mar (we are in our late 40's) questions

Hi We are planning on travelling to MI on Feb6-13 (thinking now chaning that to after carniva if its going to be dry and more costly off the resort), moving that out to Feb. 13-20.

We are thinking of at Laguna Mar. We like to keep busy and we'll want to go off resort a day or two while we are there. It sounds like the food is good at the resort and there are alot of very good places off the resort to eat and get a cold beer. I hope that is true. Is it true a beer is $1.50US? Nice, if so. We know our street smarts, we like to drink but know we need to be careful whenever travelling ANYWHERE and we leave anything valuable at home and treat everyone with respect!! I hope MI is no different better/worse than any other place we've been.

We've travelled to Florida, Montego Bay Jamaica, Nassua Bahamas and Punta Cana Domincan Republic......coud anyone maybe compare MI to these places for us and possibly the Laguna Mar with any of these locales? Appreciate any input we can get.

Another question, does the Laguna Mar in MI have a casino, I have seen this written on here but its not noted on their site.

Thanks very much.

Hello, I'm a Venezuelan guy who lives in London. I don't know what you want to get out our your holiday in Margarita but I wouldn't recommend Laguna Mar unfortunately. It used to be a fantastic complex when it opened 30 years ago but there hasn't been significant investment since the opening and the property is now tired. I wouldn't stay there myself.

I'm actually going with my partner to Margarita on 20th January for a week. We will be staying at Agua Dorada by Lidotel (www.lidotel.com.ve) for 2 nights. It's located in Playa El Agua which is considered the best beach in Margarita. We will stay for the last two nights at the IKIN hotel (ikinmargarita.com). Other safe option that I recommend is Lidotel at Sambil Shopping centre but bear in mind that there are no beaches nearby.

Margarita can be really cheap if you get the right exchange rate for your dollars. Official rate if BsF 4.30 per dollar but we have managed to sell today at 16.5 BFs per dollar. Don't think is doggy as everyone sell dollars in the black market.

I forgot to say that you cannot compare Margarita to Jamaica, the Bahamas or Punta Cana as the island is very under developed and there is no international infrastructure. However, you can have a fantastic time there if you know where to go.

We've been to Lagunamar 2 years ago and going back again this year with 2 kids. Loved it, yes hotel a bit tired but food was good, rooms were clean, beach was not overcrowded and we always had chairs, had a great time on island. Did not get sick, enjoyed the night show, drinks were good. Lot's of foreigners but that's how we like it. We hate big resorts and this suited our needs. We went on the jeep tour and loved it. Also went shopping to Sambil mall (very expensive) and the market. We were always careful and did not go out the resort at night. Hope this helps.

Laguna Mar was alright. I stayed there 2 or 3 times as a single and had a great time. The lush tropical gardens and palm trees in the back are so beautiful to stroll through in the evenings. I didn't like however that they painted the building brown. It was much nicer as white. Also there used to be an incompleted building section that was abandoned by the developers. I don't know if that ever got completed. Be sure to get the garden view and not the street view. The garden view is the best. Get a junior suite. Don't worry, you'll like Laguna Mar.

Actually there are two buildings. The North tower and the South Tower. Make sure when coming back at night in a taxi from the bars that they drop you off in the correct tower. Once they dropped me off in the wrong tower during a power outage and I was trying to ram my key in the key hole. Poor people in the room must have been petrified! LOL

You Can't compare MI to any of your other destinations, it is truly unique and you will love it if you like to travel. Like you said use your travel smarts, dont go out alone at night, take Taxi's everywhere and leave your valuables in your room and you will be fine.

As others said it is very underdeveloped and dont think they truly understand the value of tourism, I find this refreshing as you dont seem to get the begging there and dont think the vendors quite figured out how muh we are willing to pay for stuff while on vacation.

The locals are great if you show them some respect but like everywhere there are bad apples.

Just a couple of things...beer is LESS than $1.50 so that's a perk. Playa el Agua is not necessarily the best beach on the island but it is the most populated and touristy. "Best" is really a matter of taste. I enjoy it there but you may want to take the chance to visit several different beaches regardless of where you end up staying. The Lidotel is a very nice upscale boutique style hotel but it is not AI if that's what you want and if you're looking for a beachy atmospehere you will be disappointed as it is located in a mall.

Where we go to eat they charge under Bs.10 for a Polar Light.

Remember the restaurants & bars are buying them in cases of 36 for under US$2.60 a case or US$0.07 each. That's Bs.2,6 each so even at Bs.10 that's a 300% markup.

How much are they this year at the beach in El Agua, PEA? Have everything gone up like crazy because of the high dollar?

$2.60 a case of 36? Am I reading that right? Is that a special rate?
