The Jurassic Coast

Hi.

My fossil mad kids want to go fossil-hunting in Lyme Regis over Easter. I've been to Lyme once - years ago - can anyone recommend anywhere child-friendly to stay and where's the best place for fossil-hunting? We will have a car.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi micra1

The Jurassic Coast stretches from Exmouth to Weymouth, though I know Lyme Regis has a good reputation for fossils.

Can I therefore suggest the following as somewhere to stay

www.datacottage.com/horriford/index.html

This is situated just to the West of Lyme Regis and also makes the rest of this coastline easily accessible by car.

This is a working farm in as much as they breed Alpacas for their wool and you couldn't hope to meet a nicer couple than the Pady's who own and run Horriford Farm.

And if the kids want a day off from fossil hunting, the farm may provide a welcome alternative.

Also check out Colyton's website here

I can recommend the Kingfisher pub, which is regularly in the Good Pub Guide.

I am sure you will have a good trip.

We visited the Jurassic Coast recently. Charmouth is reputedly the best place for finding fossils, but we didn't have any success in about 2 hours of trying. There is, however, a terrific little gift shop there that has huge ichthyosaur fossils displayed on the wall. The shop owner, a personable fellow by the name of Tony Gill, found them exposed in the cliff after a raging storm many years ago. If you come up empty handed, you can always buy a small fossil souvenir (found by other people!) at incredibly reasonable prices. We did. :)
