2 complete days in Kalambaka - Meteora - Looking for Advice

Hello..

I need some help planning my trip to Kalambaka.

We will take a rented car from a Friday in the afternoon from Athens and expect arriving to Kastraki (where is located our hotel) by night. (the travel will be in the last week of March)

We have the saturday and sunday... returning on Monday early in the morning to Athens airport (the flight is at 5:00pm).

We have 2 children... 5 and 8 years old and my wife and I are a mid-30 years old and like this kind of trips (Already visited MachuPicchu with kids hehehhehe, i.e.). Please someone can give a sort of idea about what to do there?.

Saturday: monasteries.... (the best ones??) What to do in the afternoon? Where can i take pictures in the sunset?

Sunday: we don´t know what to do. Monasteries again?? what other thing can we visit? something interesting in the surrounding areas?

Thank you!!!!

I think with children in tow you will be best spreading monastery visits over both days - you should aim to get to your first one each morning quite early, before the coach parties arrive. Aim for Grand Meteora first - the biggest & best - but all have their charms. Certainly would be a good plan to drive back up at the end of the day because the coaches will have gone & if you get lucky with a good sunset it is an awesome & magical place without the crowds & traffic!

In the afternoons you could have a wander around Kalambaka, or take a drive into the Pindhos Mountains, or perhaps take a drive up the old road that takes you to the Katara Pass with stunning views. Or drive to Metsovo - a busy Alpine-like town. A lot will depend on the weather. In March there could be snow! You will certainly see it on the mountain peaks if not lower down.

Hi,

With young kids I would also stay in Kalambaka since you will spend a lot of time driving to the area and back. Metsovo, suggested by tsipouro is worth a visit and way beyond are the magical Papingo villages but that would entail quite a long drive.

The OP says they already have hotel in Kastraki - which is just fine, seeing as they have a car.

Papingo in March? Oooer!!

Thank you so much, Angelina S, tsipouro and AjarnAndy.

I´ll take the advice about visiting 4 monasteries instead of all.. I think it will be enough considering we are with kids. Then, enyoing food, walking between streets in the town and trying to meet people and learn about his lifestyle.

Hi,

If you have hiked the Inca trail to Machu Pichu or hiked there from Aguas Calientes the hiking/walking to the monasteries around Kalambaka will be very easy. Good luck and enjoy !

Angelina - you appear to be on TA under 2 or 3 different names & all the time promoting a business in the area. I see some of your other posts got removed as such. Please do not keep doing this because when posts are removed in the middle of the thread the sense of the thread starts to get confusing for people who are searching for information.

Someone mentioned on another thread that the vast majority of visitors to Meteora are not spending much time in the area, so are unlikely to have the time to go off on your tours & hikes. Others who do spend time around Meteora/Aspropotamos/Haliki (like myself) are capable of making their own explorations to a large extent as they will be arriving by car. I would imagine your business in the area is going to be of more interest to residents/Greeks who are looking for a few days adventure or exploration & who are likely to have the right clothing, footwear etc for some semi-serious hikes. The fly-by visitor to the area will not be equipped for the terrain, especially in late autumn through to early spring.

Please give out actual useful information, but do not try to use TA as a marketing tool to attract potential paying customers to your own website. This is not allowed under TA rules & signing on with several different names is easily tracked by IP addresses!

It is also not a good idea to put your email address on the forums as you will attract unwanted attention/spam etc.
