Lake Atitlan with children

We are planning a week at Lake Atitlan in March. We are staying in a house between Santa Cruz and Jaibalito. We've got 4 kids, the youngest is 4, the oldest is 10. We definitely want to do some hiking and exploring. Is a guide necessary for hiking? Any we could do on our own? Our kids are pretty good hikers. Also, just hearing that perhaps there is a water quality issue? Is the lake swimmable???? Thanks!

As a matter of common sense please try to get someone, call it guide or whatever you want call him to go with you guys. I'm sure you don't want to expose your kids to an unpleasant experience. Not only he would act as protection but you all could also learn information about the area that your kids could share back in the classroom. For a few quetzales you can give someone the opportunity to make some money for the day. There is an area map on this site www.mapasdeguatemala.com

Guides aren't for hiking expertise, they're for security. They know the trails, latest incident reports, etc. You should get one.

And why visit an area with out bumping elbows with locals, anyway? It's a good idea all around imo.

I was there a few years ago with kids and what a special spot.Theres a real nice hotel on the shoreline, you have to get a boat to, called dos mundos.Anyway, theres a little village close by where the kids approach you and say quetzal photo. Its a great photo op.Safety wise, yes,id be careful.Tical and Flores would be good to. Lots of great photos
