Anyone ever mail a package from the states to CR?

Recently while visiting Dominical we were fishing with a local guide and during the day my wife broke one of his fishing poles. We told him that we would replace it and was curious if anyone has mailed anything like a package to Costa Rica? If you were successful and how long it took? Thanks.

I get mail from the States sometimes, actually always amazed that it arrives but if the guide has a PO box it should get here just fine. Can take WEEKS, I remember years and years ago I had an important document that had to be in CR (I was in the USA) so I sent overnight delivery with DHL....

It took 3 weeks...

Cheers and Good Luck

Incabod, thanks and do understand, we mailed postcards a few years ago and they took a month. The cost of shipping versus the US Mail is significant...

You can contact your amigo here in Costa Rica...he can open a FREE account with CARGA TICA ...and you can ship the package to Carga Tica in Miami...they will bring the package in a few days...I do it all the time...

Carga Tica phone number in Miami...(305) 4777-5508

It is a nice fast and secure way to send anything from USA...

One thing. Don't actually list the value of the rod on the package. Just mention gift.

People mail packages to Costa Rica all the time. I have received many.

Basically, you have two choices: Mail it through the US Post Office and it will go through the Correos de Costa Rica. If the people you are sending to have a post office box (apartado) send it there. Some people do not have home delivery in remote areas so this is the best option for that.

The other choice is a private mail service such as Carga Tica mentioned by roadadvisor. This way, you mail the package to a Miami address and then Carga Tica ships it to San Jose. Usually, the recipient can make arrangements to have it sent to him some way - often on the bus - if they don't live in or near San Jose.

Sometimes packages get held up in customs - which will have to be paid - and if the package is shipped through Correos de Costa Rica, the recipient might have to go to the nearest customs location to pay the duties. Usually, the private mail service will take care of this and then you pay them.

I am continually amazed at the level of knowledge of people here on Trip Advisor. I really apreciate the help with this. The "gift" will only be worth about $50.00 US. UPS wanted $300.00 to ship, Fed Ex wanted $200 and the Post Office wants about $12.00 to mail it. Road advisor or Hattie you mantioned Carga Tica, do they have a website I could visit to get an idea on the cost of shipping this way, again thanks for your help.

I have mailed things through the regular post office and the packages arrived, just took a while. The hard part was getting an address the post office here in the States was comfortable with.

I have sent several packages to CR via USPS with varying results. CD's and dvd's went through just fine. A box of store bought cookies never made it. Figure 2-3 weeks for 'air mail.' I think you want some way to track your package based on the value.

I have never used one of the Miami-based courier services, so I can't recommend one.

bob - Check roadadvisor's post again - www.cargatica.com - is what he posted there.

And by the way, thanks for being a man of your word and replacing that rod.

And yeah, mrolfes, the US post office is not all that happy with "Detras del Colegio" or "100 metros sur del cathedral" but after you explain, they should be OK with it.

Thanks Hattie we try. The gentleman who took us fishing was just that, a gentleman and My wife felt awlful for breaking his pole. And thanks to all you folks we should be able to, without having to take a loan out....
