Grand Canyon

We're staying in Scottsdale at the Westin Kierland for a few days in October. Unfortunately, most of our daylight hours will be spent in a conference. However, there is a short block of time (3:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.) available the first day. Is it possible to get from our hotel to the Grand Canyon and back in that time (and is it worth the rushed trip?) We've never seen the canyon and are unlikely to be back in Arizona anytime soon. Thanks.

It is 4.5 hours - EACH WAY - from Scottsdale to the Grand Canyon. Given your time limitations, no, you wouldn't be able to drive there and back. You might want to look at doing an overflight, though. Westwind Air Service out of Deer Valley has one that's about 3 hours long, which would not only allow you to see the Grand Canyon, but a good chunk of Arizona. Check them out at www.westwindairservice.com

Agreed, it is a lllloooong trip up the state to the GC, but have you seen Sedona? It is a beautiful red rock region that is only about 90 minutes north of Kierland and always breathtaking. Check out their websites. You will find hiking, walking, shopping, jeep rides, great restaurants, art galleries as well. You could leave at 7, have breakfast and a hike or take a tour and head back by noon. Without the drive, you could head north to Carefree and see El Pedregal fMarketplace for an early lunch, enjoy the Heard Museum annex and do some shopping.

Thanks so much for the info about the alternative trips--we're thinking we'll do the Sedona one. And, yes, the prospect of a nine hour drive for a one-hour view of the Grand Canyon doesn't sound like a good idea. Again, thanks.
