Things to do In Phoenix/Scottsdale for young adults

I've been looking through the things to do, but I'm having trouble coming up with a good itinerary. My brother, mother, and I are heading out to Scottsdale to say at the Xona Resort for 5 days in march. While I plan on hanging out by the pool and relaxing, I'd like to find some interesting things to do a couple of those days. I am 22, but my brother is 20 so no bars for us. We're not really golfers, so thats out. As far as I know, Casinos are all 21+ in AZ so thats out as well. Museums and things may be interesting, though with the attention span of my brother I doubt he'd buy in to something like that. I had a great idea of renting motorcycles (We've been riding since we were little), either dirtbikes or road bikes, but I can't seem to find a place that will rent to anyone under 25. I've also thought about doing renting a jeep for a day, so that may be a possibility. We'll have a rental car, but I don't think it will be much for offroading.

So I'm just looking for some ideas. Day trips would be fun, cool places, interesting entertainment; that would really fit the bill. We're much more into "off the beaten path" rather than being herded through a tourist establishment. Also, any recommended restaurants in the area would be great. Thanks for the information!

Greetings from a fellow Ann Arborite. I grew up there and just hosted one of my high school buddies and his wife here in AZ for a week.

I'd suggest a day trip to Sedona and possibly another day trip to the Grand Canyon NP. Sedona is 2 hours from Scottsdale, GCNP is 4 hours. Both can be done as day trips and are well worth the time. Do a jeep tour in Sedona and tour the GCNP on your own.

Closer to Scottsdale, Frank Loyd Wright's home at Talisen West is a popular place, and the Heard Musem in PHX is one of the leading museums for native american culture.

Ideas:

Mountain biking, hiking, tour Old Town Scottsdale, day trip to Sedona and possibly Tucson; Grand Canyon is best done with an overnight stay IMHO - but well worth it. Rent a bike and cruise the canal area from Scottsdale, heading west. Catch a Suns (basketball) game or spring training game, tour the ballpark downtown and eat at Friday's in the ballpark.

Also, I suggest calling the concierge at the Xona Resort. Their website indicates that their concierge is ready and willing to help you plan activities and give you ideas. Definitely take advantage of that, as the concierge desk will almost certainly have discount coupons, special events lists, etc.

Take a balloon ride out over the desert

Tour the University of Phoenix stadium where the super bowl was held in 2008 and home of the Fiesta Bowl game

Go the Arizona Renaissance Festival

You can rent costumes to walk around in and really get into the theme of the day.

Check out ASU in Tempe - fun college town and then of course there is Tempe Town Lake with its own activities.

I definitely agree with the Sedona recommendation. Another option would be horseback riding through the Tonto National Forrest. You could also hike up Camelback Mountain. It is not easy, but it is not difficult and you can see over the entire valley once you reach the top. This might be a little extreme, but you could go skydiving at Skydive Arizona. It is in Eloy, which is about an hour towards Tucson. More people jump there per year than any other dropzone in the entire country and the Navy SEAL's and the Army's Golden Knight's train there i.e. they are one the safest, relatively speaking of course. 18 is the age limit, so your brother would be fine.

In regards to restaurants, El Molino for cheap Mexican, Delux for cheeseburgers and sweet potato fries, and The Ocean Club for an upscale/expensive dinner. Matt's Big Breakfast and La grande orange have awesome breakfasts.
