Mardi Gras March 4 2014 in Phoenix

Hi local experts

Can anyone please tell me if there is any parade for Mardi Gras which I am reliably informed is March 4th this year? I can find a few things in February but nothing actually on March 4th.

We are only in Phoenix/Scottsdale for a few days and would hate to miss a great MG parade as this is not something we do in Europe too much!

Thanks for your help!

Binche, Belgium, home of a Mardi Gras museum, has an historic Mardi Gras parade, where parade participants throw oranges at spectators (I got to sit in a VIP section behind chicken wire). As you apparently have discovered, Phoenix has a Mardi Gras parade Feb. 9. I wouldn't expect a second. Most cities I know don't even have that. A few restaurants and clubs may have "festivities" on the 4th, but, except for New Orleans, American locations are often rather casual as to marking the exact Mardi Gras date which, of course, varies by year.

We're in Brazil, where celebrations start soon after New Years in many cities (e.g., weekly pre-Carnaval "blocos"). The U.S. generally does not have a tradition of celebrating Mardi Gras, to mark the last blow-out before Lent starts, except for Louisiana, which had a more French than English tradition.

…wikipedia.org/wiki/Mardi_Gras_in_the_United… Dates of celebrations vary widely, and Arizona isn't even mentioned. There are apparently some "Brazilian" restaurants in Phoenix/Scottsdale, including those in the chain Fogo de Chao (all-you-can eat meat or churrscaria). I imagine they'll have something on that day. You could phone them and ask if there's a local Brazilian community that puts on any events.

There is a Brazilian Day, though in September. Web site says the organizer is "Afro:Baile is an award-winning Brazilian Music record label based in Arizona." Info@Afrobaile.com They may have ideas. I know nothing about them.

A quick google search shows that the 2/9 date was for LAST year. Perhaps Sutter can give us a current link for this year's parade as I doubt it will be held on a Sunday.

Many thanks everyone for your comments. Looks like I am out of luck on that one, but I will check out the Brazilian restaurants.
