lakes!

hello!

we'll be in the phoenix area for three nights in december, the 22,23 and 24.

ive read a lot about canyon lake and saguaro lake and they both sound and look amazing in all the pictures. however, the pictures ive seen make it seem like youre on this quiet boat cruise with the just the views, and i recently read an issue of arizona highways from 1967 and even back then it says the place is always super busy with motor boats on the weekends. im wondering if it will still be worth going that weekend right before christmas or if the lake will just be so crowded and busy with other boats that it really wont be as idyllic as all the pictures make it seem.

any thoughts?

also, does anyone have any information about whether or not the road from phoenix to canyon lake is super trecherous? we dont mind winding roads, but ones on cliff edges we are not fans of.

Yes, by all means go. Both are great. Saguaro has a boat ride that is an hour and a half and their restaurant is very nice. In December there is not as much private boat traffic. The road to Canyon lake is beautiful. It is very windy with many hairpin turns but I would not call it treacherous. There is a beautiful lookout spot on the way down to stop and enjoy the view. After you get to the lake, continue on about 1 1/2 miles to Tortilla Flat. It is an old stage coach stop and is now a very quaint and unusual restaurant. Very good food and a great stop. We take all our visitors there. You can also stop at Goldfield a restored "Ghost" town. It's worth a look around and you pass it on the way to Canyon Lake.
