need advice on affordable golf holiday

My parents are in their eighties. My mother has announced that she wants to send my dad and my brother, both avid golfers, on a golf getaway this winter. I am trying to plan this for them, but I know nothing about golf! Would love input from others. Here are the criteria:

- one will be flying from Saskatoon, the other from Edmonton

- 5 to 7 days

- would like to find condo-like accommodation (not just a hotel room)

- nice golf course

- not terribly expensive! (I realize this is vague, but just to let you know I am not looking for a luxury trip)

There are countless great golf courses to choose from in the Metro Phoenix area. It really will help us if you give us a general budget, though, as well as the month you'd like to travel. For example, February, March, and April would be extremely expensive, as that's our highest season. November-January isn't "cheap", but you can usually still find deals, especially for the week after New Year's.

Also, there are some resorts that offer fantastic golf specials; it might be worth it to look into those, as opposed to just staying in a condo. (The Wigwam Resort sometimes offers unlimited golf deals, for example, as does the Talking Stick Resort and Casino.) Otherwise, check out www.vrbo.com for house and condo rentals, or even www.airbnb.com. Also, the website www.golfnow.com often has good specials.

As noted, winter is high season and condo rentals experience their highest demand, hence, highest rates. I'll let the PHX locals point you to the best places to look. As for golf, it would help to know your parents level of play or golf handicaps. Again, rates will be at a premium but there are ways to save money. Booking last minute tee times through websites like Golfnow and Standbygolf are probably the best. Also have them pick up some of the golf course advertising booklets at golf supply shops and hotel lobbies. Many courses offer coupon rates and discounts, but they will have restrictions. So the key to economizing is being flexible. Planning to stay and play at one facility will probably cost more. Resorts like WigWam do have multiple courses and sometimes offer packages but the value really doesn't kick in unless you play a couple of rounds per day. I doubt that a couple in their 80s would want to do that.

I've planned golf holidays for a group of women in the past and the place we stayed twice used to be called Resort Suites in Scottsdale - now renamed to Zona - website is www.zonascottsdale.com.

Although they are a hotel, most rooms are condo type suites and they have a restaurant on site. They have planners to help you plan so you can give them an idea of budget and the level of golfer your dad and brother are and they can put together a package for you..I highly recommend them. Plus they are located in a really great area off north scottsdale road with plenty of restaurant choices very close by. I dealt with a fellow named Steve Nicodemus - he was great and I think he's still there.
