Of the two, I'd go with the Embassy Suites. It's just a nicer hotel in general. That said, they are both older hotels in need of updating, and the area itself isn't all that great. If you're looking strictly for a budget hotel, there are others that are better, IMHO.

Agreeing with HB. I've used the ES in the past, but the metro center area is not a place I like anymore. Look for something further up I-17 closer to 101 or Happy Valley or even Anthem.

What are your plans?

Going to a wedding and the Embassy is where everyone is staying. I am a bit worried. There is one couple at the La Quinta. I would much have preferred to stay in Scottsdale but the wedding is close to the Embassy.

Is there anything fun close by? Which is closer Phoenix or Scottsdale?

Thank you.

You'll be fine at the Embassy, if you want to be close to the other guests. They do have a bar/restaurant in the lobby where you all could hang out together. Just don't leave ANYTHING in your car - that's the main problem with that area, car break-ins.

As far as things to do, there isn't much in the way of tourist attractions that's close to the hotel (which is IN Phoenix). You are, however, close to I-17 and the Loop 101 freeways, which can quickly get you to other parts of the city, or get you headed north, if you wanted to do a day trip to Sedona, or even the Grand Canyon. There's lots to do in Phx/Scottsdale and the surrounding area, as well. How long will you be here, and what are your interests? (shopping, dining, museums, hiking, etc.)

The wedding is at Aldea. Shopping and eating are important. I know there is an Art Show in Scottsdale that weekend. Maybe some will want to go to a baseball game. Most guests are there for 3 to 5 days. Casinos might be fun for some. Hoping it is warm so people can hang by the pool. I know we will all have fun but I guess I am a bit of a snob. I do not need luxury but I do like nice things.

If most of the party is staying at Embassy Suites, then I'd stay there. You'll be with people you know. You'll be moving around with other people, and not solo.

This is why it's important to provide more information in the Original Post.

Well, you won't be all that close to any of your chosen activities, but as mentioned, it's a quick hop onto the freeways to get wherever you'd like to go. For the best shopping and restaurants, head to Old Town Scottsdale. It would also be only about a 20 minute drive to get to Desert Ridge, an outdoor shopping mall with restaurants, or slightly longer to get to Kierland Commons, a more upscale outdoor shopping area with some excellent restaurants. Kierland is just straight East from your hotel.

Beyond that, I do understand what you mean about wanting to stay at a decent place. Personally, for being here 3-5 days, I'd have recommended that the group choose a hotel that's closer to "things to do", since the wedding is only 1 day. But, it's also high season here, and I'm sure you all got a good rate for the Embasy Suites.

Also, for baseball games, check this website:

www.cactusleague.com

And there are a number of casinos, though none that are close to your hotel. One of the nicest is the Talking Stick Resort and Casino, although it's a good 45+ minute drive from your hotel, more in rush hour or bad traffic.

Have a great time!

One other thing you could do would be head to Cave Creek, north of Phoenix. It's a very pretty drive out there, and exploring downtown Cave Creek can be a lot of fun - it's a very "cowboy" style town with unique shops. Just head north on I-17, east on the 101, and then head north on Cave Creek Rd, which will take you all the way into Cave Creek. Stop at the "Frontier Town", have lunch at El Encanto, and stop in at the Town Dump store. Also, the Buffalo Chip Saloon is fun in the evenings, and when they have bull riding. Also is a great place for a bachelor/bachelorette party, just sayin'! ;)
