Hi Baile, Weather Underground is a great site...under Local Weather tab above, click on History and Data and you can search any date, week or month in the past for actual data.

December is our winter, so we will have cold and cool days. Typically our temps run in the 60's and 70's F. We can have an occasional rain storm and cold spell when the temps drop into the 50's during the day and colder at night and early morning. It is a very popular time of the year here and people come from around the world for our "winter" climate.

Public transportation in the valley is very undeveloped, especially compared to the UK. It (buses) is pretty much used mainly by commuters. Most people will rent cars when they get here, even if just for a few days to get out and about.

That being said, there is a free trolley service in the downtown/Old Town area of Scottsdale. And we do have a few light rail lines in Phoenix and out to Tempe. Where are you staying when in town? We can help you figure out if you are on or near any of the routes.

If you are planning to be here over the holidays, you really should considering hiring a car. What little bus service we have in the Phoenix will probably be cut back during the holidays.

Renting a car will depend on your itinerary.

If you are staying in downtown Phoenix and simply want to walk around the downtown area for a couple of days, then renting a car would not be necessary. Same goes for downtown Scottsdale.

However, if you plan on leaving your "walkable radius", then listen to the warnings above and consider renting a car. Public transit in Phoenix consists of bus routes and a single light rail line. Public transit in downtown Scottsdale consists of just a couple bus routes and a free trolley service. And, as mentioned, you could run into "holiday schedules" which will reduce your options further.

If you are intent on not renting a car, the light rail is your best bet in downtown Phoenix. Light rail has only one line that goes east out of downtown to Tempe and Mesa and north on Central Ave. You can take a roundtrip both ways to get a look at the Phoenix area and feel your way around. Have you decided where you will be staying downtown?

With a jaunt on light rail, you might find Mill Avenue in Tempe to your liking, It is usually packed with students from Arizona State University (ASU), but they should be gone for the Holidays. Numerous cafes and bars on Mill, plus ASU has numerous galleries and museums. For a great steak or prime rib and a big dose of Arizona history, try Monti's, which is just to the north of the light rail stop on Mill.

North on light rail is the Phoenix Art Museum and the Heard Museum, featuring Native Americans. Between downtown and Tempe on the light rail is Pueblo Grande for a look at the prehistoric culture that designed the canal system still serving the Phoenix area.

Check with your hotel to make sure it is still running, but there has been a free shuttle that runs out to the State Capitol. The old Capitol has a museum and Wesley Bolin Plaza, which is across the street, has some interesting displays.

If you stay in Old Town/downtown Scottsdale, there is trolley service to get you around. Downtown Scottsdale is where you will find a lot galleries. There are also plentiful restaurants and nightclubs.

There is quite a bit you can do without a car, but you will also be missing a lot of things.

Have you made hotel/motel reservations yet? Things fill up quickly here over the Holidays.

Good luck. Hope you enjoy your visit.
