Parking in and around Sedona

What's the deal with paid parking? Have read a permit is needed to park certain places. Anyone know?

You may be referring to the Red Rock Pass. This is a pass for $5 a day that allows you to park at certain areas for hiking. The pass may be bought at most conveniece stores and if you are staying overnight, most motels have them. All of these areas are clearly marked as Red Rock Pass needed areas.

The Red Rock Pass money is to help the National Forest Service maintain the trails in Sedona due to the large number of visitors. You will also have to pay to visit the State Parks. And a few other recreation/hiking areas are run by concessionaires who charge a parking/entrance fee. But everything else in Sedona has free parking, e.g. shopping, art galleries, restaurants, hotels, etc.

We just returned from Sedona. We didn't need to pay to park anywhere. It was a very busy weekend so finding parking was tricky, but it definitely was free.
