Even though I've been to Fiji I have no idea what the tides are like so really can't comment on the differences or similarities.
Are you looking at the tides from a surfing or fishing point of view?
If it's surfing then you need to rely on the experts and surf when they feel it's safe, you also have to go with them out past the reef for the best surf on Upolu.
If it's fishing then then same applies, you need a guide. Because the majority of beaches are on cultural land you can't just stand on a beach and fish, you need to pay a fee to the village where the beach is.
Sorry I can't be of further help.
