Things to do and currency

My husband and I are going on a cruise and are stopping in samoa for one day. What are the main things we should see?we can book a trip via the cruise ship but wondered if it would be possible and cheaper to hire a taxi for the day on our arrival and let it take us around? If so, how much would this be?

Also what would be the best currency to take? Would it be American dollars or Samoa's currency?

Thanks

How long do you have in port. If it is a full day then you will be able to pick up a taxi at the wharf to do an island tour. It should cost no more than 180 tala (around $US80), most taxi drivers are well used to doing island tours and will stop wherever you want. You could also organise a tour, depending on what time you dock, through Samoa Scenic Tours who run very comprehensive tours from a half day to full day, stopping at all the "must sees" and setting down for an hour for lunch (provided) at beautiful Lalomanu beach. They leave from Aggie Grey's hotel which is about a 5 minute walk fromt he wharf. If you're doing it by cab have a look at Things to See and Do on jasons.com/samoa and decide what you want to see from there so as you can tell the taxi driver otherwise he might drive you around in circles.

As for currency, a cabbie will take US$ but you will have to pay by credit card or Samoan tala for an organised tour. If you're early enough you could wander into Apia (about 15 mins walk or 5 mins in a taxi) and change your currency at a Western Union office and have a look around town at the same time, go to the markets, have lunch, visit Robert Louis Stevenson Museum, etc but that wouldn't leave time for an island tour. You will get a higher rate at Western Union that you will do on board ship.

I hope this helps. Any fruther questions just ask, if not have a wonderful time.
