Bus from Ushaia to Punta Arenas - Dec 19, 07

I am looking for information on buses from Ushaia to Punta Arenas. I understand from the Lonely Planet that the buses from Ushaia to Punta Arenas only run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and that it might be difficult to get tickets. We are currently planning to leave Ushaia on Wednesday, Dec. 19th. Is there anyway we can purchase our tickets online before then?

Sorry for the delay, I have just found your post.

The buses run everyday. there are two different tourist companies :

COMAPA and TOLKAR (they sell Buses Barria, Tecni Austral and others companies). Check this travel agencies information on www.tierradelfuego.org.ar , there you will find their emails.

They usually do not accept advance bookings (you have to go on your own and pay there at the counter at the tourist agency), but they have done it for me with a group travelling in January .

They depart 5.30am every morning , some of them have bus change at Punta Arenas... and I think the price is between 150/170 argentinean pesos.

I did this journey in reverse on a really crappy bus with the driver smoking like mad which was quite horrible. I'm not sure if there's any difference but I think that was a Chilean company and perhaps the Argentinian ones are better - if you have choice. I have very limited experience but from what I've seen the Argentinian buses seemed to be better.

Also, the crossing over the Magellan strait is beautiful - make sure you wrap up with rain protective gear so that you can enjoy it from the outside - it was one of my favourite parts of my whole trip to Patagonia. The ways were huge and some people got absolutely soaked (quite funny).

Thanks to both of you for responding.

We arrive in Ushaia on Dec. 15. Do you think we will be safe in waiting to buy tickets in Ushaia then? Or should we try to buy them in Buenos Aires - we arrive there on Dec. 11.

And thanks for the tip about the rain gear. I have been looking for some at home (Canada) but everything here is heavily lined at this time of year and would take up tons of space in a suitcase. Trying to decide what clothes to carry is a challenge since we will be visiting both north and south in Argentina and I don't want to have to trek stuff around the country. I was thinking I could buy some lighted rain gear when I got to Buenos Aires - am I right?

Again, thanks for the help

Penny

The journey takes roughly 12 hours, at least 2h of which are spent at the border or messing around with the ferry across the Magellan straits.
