going with rental car into Torre del Paine & more

We are 2 traveling and would like to be 2 days inside Torre del Paine, can you visit the park with your own transportation or having a guide is compulsory?

We will be in the aerea of el Calafate & El Chalten from 14-20/February, where should we start?

Thanks

Yes, you can visit the Park with your own transportation. We visited in Jan/Feb 2010 and rented a car in Punta Arenas and then drove to the car, staying a week. Having your own transportation is a great choice as it gives you flexibility to drive to various trailheads to hike for the day, or just to 'sightsee'. I think there are about 60-70 miles of roads in the park - but you need to travel slow because they are gravel roads, with curves and gradients. You do not need a guide. You will need to stop at the entrance guard points into the park and pay the appropriate entry fee per person - I think the ticket is valid for a couple of days or so.

You will need to check the latest position on closure of parts of the park due to grass fires earlier this month - check the Chile Forum (the park is in Chile, rather than Argentina)

Missed your next question. If you are travelling from Argentina then El Calafate is the place to rent a car, not El Chalten. It is possible to drive from El Calafate to TdP, but you will need to check with the rental company whether they will allow you to take a car across the international boundary into Chile. If this is OK I understand that you need to make sure the rental company gives you all the right documentation when you pick up the car.
