volcanic ash for travel to el Calafate & Bariloloche

We're planning a trip to el Calafate & Bariloche either last wk of January or 2nd wk of March. which is a better time?

Will we have problems with the volcanic ashes? We'll be flying in from Buenos Aires.

Pls advice as we're in the planning stage.

Thank you very much.

This is impossible to guarantee, nature has its own laws and the volcanic ash is still active today. The Bariloche airport is closed until the 21st of December, but airlines operate from Esquel or Neuquén so there are ways to get there. The 2nd week of March might be cheaper as it may not be considered as being high season (actually real hig season in Bariloche is July).

I second Heart's reply.

School holidays will be over in March, there will be less people everywhere.

As for Bariloche airport, there are two different issues to consider: although closed for maintenance until the end of December, even assuming these works were finished on schedule, the volcanic ashes are an all different matter for there is no (known) schedule for them ....

Appreciate your quick replies. Look like we've to change our directions.

Would really like to visit Bariloche if I go to El Calafate. will have to put that on hold for now.

Maybe, we should head to the north, Salta, Jujuy, Cordoba, Mendoza's vendemia....etc.

will be in Argentina for 8wks. our 7th year "snowbird" in the country.loved it. Will 3 wks in those regions be too much? we''ll be based in BA. How is the high altitude situations? We had problems in Peru.

Pls advice again..thanks so much.

Remember there are other options for going to Bariloche: you can fly to either Esquel or Neuquén and the rest of the way (5-6 hs) by bus.

Or take a bus at Buenos Aires for the whole trip. There are really very good buses in Argentina, lots of people have been doing just that.
