4 days in Bariloche- how should we plan?

we have 4 days in Bariloche area, we aould like to explore the area (7 lakes, Lanine parque etc..) with a car.

Should we book a hotel for the 4 days in Bariloche? or split 2 in Bariloche and 2 in San Martín de Los Andes.

How long is the drive frmo Bariloche to SMDLA?

It's hard to say which is more beautiful--Bariloche or San Martín de Los Andes--because both are incredibly breathtaking. As such, I recommend splitting your stays with 2 nights in each destination. This is also a good idea because the Seven Lakes Drive takes 10-12 hours over 223 miles (360 km) roundtrip.

It's Patagonia: take it slow and soak in the magnificent views.

Have fun!

Actually, I like San Martín de los Andes best. I wouldn't skip it!

having just travelled the seven lakes road yesterday, we would advise avoiding it at all costs. The volcanic ash covers most of what would be the prettiest parts and the road is in turmoil with roadworks from just after Va. la angostura up to the tarmaced road at Villarino with massive amounts of dust thrown up by the traffic; a very uncomfortable journey. It's better to go round the alternative way from Bariloche to San Martin (or vice versa). Suggest check conditions again before you travel.

Guys, this is Patagonia. You'll find as many good pavimented roads as the worst dustiest ones. Volcanic ashes are spread alongside the 7 lake road but there are still beautiful places to see that haven't being damage by it. If you travel from Junin de Los Andes to Lake Huechulaufquen you'll find a breathtaking view. I've been there the previous week. Another Village that you may like is Villa Traful, 90 km away from Bariloche. Even Ted Turner has bought an Estancia here. You won't regret it!

What time of the year are you traveling? Definitely split between Bariloche and San Martin. Both are gorgeous. And definitely opt for the Seven Lakes drive, assuming you won't be there in the winter.

What is the latest situation with the ash fall in Bariloche and surrounding areas right now?

It changes pretty much every day, depending on which way the wind blows. We were there for the last few days - Monday/Tueday were clear, bit of ash on Wednesday, and clear again on Thursday.

When there is ash, it spoils the view, but it's only like a light fog. There's not tons of it falling from the sky.

we are here now, had a couple of days with little ash, we went to Villa Angostura and San Martin de lis andes. Villa Angostura is still very much affected, lots of ash also on the way but still some nice views. San Martin seems rather clean of ash. Today was rainy all day so probably it's going to be clear of ash

Thank you very much, hila a and The IntrepidEx.!

We've decided to forgo any ash and are rescheduled for the great Fitz Roy mountains in El Chalten Argentina.
