Need help with directions

We will be flying into BA and will stay at a hotel (yet to be decided) before heading to the pier for our cruise the next day. I would like help to know how far the airport to downtown and how far to the pier (Darsena Norte). We will be having several large luggages so what is the recommended transfers to use?

Just how "cheap" are the taxies from the airport to a downtown hotel and from there to the pier? Or would another transportation (e.g. shuttle) would be better?

Also, what is the recommended hotel to stay at? We want to get as much culture as we can during our 24 hour stay. Most likely while downtown, we will walk unless there is a tour recommended to get the full flavor or BA.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. It appears that I should book a hotel now for our December trip as they fill up fast? Thank you!

As you exit customs at Ezeiza Airport you will see several booths of fixed-rate taxi companies. My favorite is Transfer-Express (another is Manuel Tienda Leon). You tell the attendant at the counter where to wish to go and pay with a major credit card. They escort you to the car and that's it. If the driver helps you with luggage a US$ 2-3 tip is warranted. Do not take cabs offered by shills cruising the arrivals area.

You can take a taxi from EZE to downtown for 40-45pesos. Go to one of the booths. The first group of booths you see as you exit customs are the most expensive. go past them and into the main lobby area and you will see another booth....it will be a couple of dollars less expensive.....

There are many good hotels for one night stay. The hotel I have used most recently is the Sofitel Madero, in Puerto Madero. Check the price on Travelocity. It was still 80 dollars a night for a double at least through the end of January....

Get someone from the hotel to phone for a taxi once you arrive in the hotel....www.hotelmadero.com

Plaza de Mayo, Florida pedestrian mall (be sure to see Gallerias Pacifico Mall), a tour of Teatro Colon, and a trip to the Recoleta Cemetary are all recommended.

Enjoy a great Argentine steak while you are in BA, washed down with a Malbec wine from Mendoza. Or try pasta, equally good.....If you have the energy, an evening tango dinner show is a nice way to spend an evening. I like Sr. Tango, which is a las vegas type show more than a pure Tango show....complete with a horse on stage....great fun....

Thank you both for your wonderful advice and I will follow them.

I read that someone stayed at the Best Western Embassy on Centro Street for $34.00 a night. I checked into it and got a room. Am I making a mistake staying there and should I find another place or do you think it is a good place to stay? We want to be close to the main shopping areas (e.g., Florida St), somewhere safe and most of all clean.

I am also concerned about safey in BA. I just read in the Budget Travel magazine to be sure to watch the sales clerk wrap up your items that you purchased and make sure they don't turn their backs on you because the person writing said when she got home, all she got was empty boxes filled with paper.

I also read about one person from the fourm that got robbed as soon as got to BA. She warend not to wear sunglasses, jewlrey, etc - yikes! I don't know if I can handle all of this.

Do not know about hotel. Other reports are flukes. I moved here Dec 30th, have had no problems.

But I don't wear jewelry, nor do a carry a huge camera with a strap around my neck that screams ...tourist...tourist.

But I do the same in Paris and New York. The "feel" of BA is very safe.
