Dalyan? Olu Deniz?

I'm planning a 12 night trip to Turkey in August. I haven't been to Turkey since a really disastorous trip to marmaris as one of our first holiday abroad 10 years ago.

We've decided to give Dalyan or Olu Deniz a try after recommendations from friends and family.

We are now experienced travellers and love, kenya, Greek islands, India, Egypt and especially Goa. I would love nothing more than to find a peaceful beach bar where I can put my toes in the sand and listen to chilled tunes.

My husband works in a school so doesn't want to be around the hordes but we both love people watching and taking in the atmosphere. We're also keen to hire a car and see the sights.

However I'm having trouble deciding on Dalyan or Olu Deniz and also which places to book to stay in. Looking for somewhere relaxing, friendly, not too expensive and nopt too far to walk to great bars, restaurants. Not too fussed about night clubs.

Thanks for any advice in advance

Oul Deniz is very lovely but not sure if it is what you are looking for as it is a bit more family oriantated so not just as chilled out but still much much better than Marmaris, I guess there are the bean bags to chill out on or suger beach that is away from the crowds. Dalyan isnt on the beach but not stayed there so cant comment. Kalkan is more relaxed and chilled out, however not sandy beaches but lovely beach clubs.Sure where ever you go you will love your trip to Turkey.

I love Dalyan, but it is up the river and not actually on the beach (which is beautiful!). But I reckon Olu Deniz would possibly suit you better - on a beach and the beautiful lagoon, sounds as though you would enjoy Sugar Beach on the lagoon and "chilling out" on the beanbags, lots of restaurants and cafes and bars. If you hire a car you are nearer the main sites than you are at Dalyan(eg ruins at Xantos, Tlos, Pinara etc., the beautiful unspoiled beach at Patara - just over an hour's drive or so from Fethiye). Nearer by (easily accessible by car or "dolmus" minibus) you have the bustling town and port of Fethiye, or beautiful unspoilt Gemiler Beach, abandoned Greek village in KayaKoyu. Then there are boat trips from Fethiye....

Really neither places are anything like the size or anything of Marmaris - I am sure you will have a great time!

I would go for Olu Deniz, as there is a great choice of places nearby to explore, and you can have a day Trip to Dalyan to see what you missed.

Enjoy it (whichever you go for)

I also love Goa, have been to many countries near and far, and for me Dalyan is my choice! I never thought we would return to the same place time and time again, but we cannot wait until we return to our lovely Dalyan!roll on June!

The big word here is 'August', the month itself can alter the experience and atmosphere of anywhere on the planet!

I am in Oludeniz in two weeks time and the place is blissful ( I actually provide some of the chill music for the bars and the bean bag beach music- I take it over )

But alas, August is a very different story, the place- as you will gather from my posts- will always be beautiful and will far outlive us mere mortals, but the inevitable increase in tourism this year may be overkill, how sad that may be, we will see.

In saying that, that's the deal and it's not negotiable so it's a case of- hopefully- every visitor appreciating the place and behaving 100%.

I am also there in July- family school hols etc- and October, guess which months I prefer!

Just to add my two cents...

Olu Deniz has the one major advantage that its on the beach. If thats important Olu Deniz it is. Dalyans beach is excellent but its a 1/2hour boat or 20min Dolmus away, and there is only a smack bar on the beach - its proected because of the turtles so there's not much development.

I would say however that in all other aspects I think Dalyan is better. Most hotels are small and friendly, and there is a lot of privately owned villas and apartments to rent.

It has excellent restuarants and bars. Its slightly cheaper than Olu Deniz. Its also quieter and more relaxing. Its nearer the airport. Its closer to most of the places you might want to visit excursion wise. The "chav" count seems lower to me as well. Its just as nice to gaze at the river and rock tombs as it is the beach.

Perhaps most importantly however, its a turkish town/big village. Turkish people actually live there, and not all just for the tourist trade. Olu Deniz is a tourist resort.

That said, there is nothing to stop you renting a car and seeing both places, wherever you stay. If you decide you've made the wrong choice, then do the other next year. Enjoy your holiday. Glad you've not let marmaris put you off Turkey.

I have been to both resorts. Spent many many years holidaying in Olu Deniz and as lovely as it was/is, we just found over the last few years it had become much more commercialised than we would like. We looked around and found Dalyan which is smaller and compact, a bit like Olu Deniz used to be like in the early days... I now prefer Dalyan but having said that, if you decide on Olu, I'm sure you will have a fab time.

Having been to both, I think you would prefer Dalyan. You can get to both ends of the beach. The boat end is busier as all the day trips go there, the dolmus end attracts more locals. If you walk along the beach you will find that you are on your own with people just walking the sand bar.
