Stellenbosch for longer term stay?

Hi all -

We are wondering if Stellenbosch would be a good place to stay for a few weeks in late December or January? It looks like most people visit Stellenbosch and the wine region for a few days at a time, but not longer term.

Here's some background - we prefer to stay in a house/apartment somewhere that we can walk to the local market or grocery stores, cook our own meals at home, going out a few times for nice dinners, and generally enjoy living in an area for a few weeks at a time.

We love Adelaide, South Australia and we're hoping to find a similar city/town in South Africa. Things we love about Adelaide: the weather, how walkable the city is (we don't usually rent a car, we just walk everywhere), how close it is to 4 excellent wine regions, it's proximity to great beaches and places for day trips.

We are just starting our search and are open to suggestions for places to stay. Any help would be appreciated!

We stayed there for 2 nights in July. You mention you will not have a car. There are many, many vineyards many with outstanding restaurants however, they are not within walking distance. I do not know if there are other forms of transport. Both Franschhoek and Cape Town are within an hours car drive. You could easily do day trips to Cape Town by car as there is a lot to see and do there.

Stallenbosch is a quaint town where you could settle in, however, to make the most of the amazing locations nearby, I would think a car is essential.

Stellenbosch is a beautiful university town. From mid December until late January the university closed & the students are away which makes it much quieter than usual. 3 years ago we spent 2 weeks there over Christmas & New Year & it was absolutely perfect. It's a great place for walking & totally safe with tree lined streets & beautiful houses & gardens.

You can also do some serious hill walks, again from the town. There are plenty of good restaurants & shops & a daily market. You will certainly be able to manage without a car. You will even be able to walk to some of the vineyards or take a cheap taxi ride.

The beaches near Somerset West are more problematical & are a good 30 minutes drive away.

I love Stellenbosch & find it to be every bit as delightful as Adelaide.

Thank you both for the great answers - this helps tremendously.

Is there public transit from Stellenbosch to other areas, or into Cape Town?

As far as car rentals go, we don't mind renting now and again for day trips - but then one person always misses out on either wine tasting or scenery or because we are both so focused on the driving that we don't see everything. We do like to go on tours though and don't mind doing so with other people.

Does anyone know if there are wine festivals in the region? If so, what time of the year?

Outside of Cape Town public transport is virtually non existent. As for tours I'm sure that these can be arranged locally. A very pleasant way to pass the day is to tour several wineries with a local driver. It won't be too expensive.

The Stellenbosch Wine Festival is 25 Jan to 3 Feb this year. For other dates, please see below:
