In Knysna itself and for more informal eating try Ile de Pain or 35*South. A little way out of town at the Pezula resort and for top nosh fine dining try Zachary's

Hi. My favourite restaurant in Knysna is Cruise Cafe, on the waterfront. Scirocco at Thesen Islands also very good. They also do a free shuttle bus from your accomodation to the restaurant. Good pizzas at the place at the Heads - can't remember it's name, Col....??

If you want to have a unique and amazing dining experience in Knysna then do not miss going to Firefly. For some or other reason Firefly seems to have remained a type of secret in Knysna however believe me it is one of the most incredible dining experiences in town. As I write this mail I know that I will be dining at Firefly on Wednesday night and I cant wait.

The restaurant is run by a mother and daughter team by name of Dell and Sancha. The call themselves purveyors of spice and believe me that exactly what thy are. The specialise in aromatic curries but do not let this fool you as there is so much more in their food than curry. If you are lucky and Dell has made liquorice ice cream for a dessert special but the lot and enjoy it all.

I cannot recommend this venue enough. It is absolutely fabulous and bear in mind that the restaurant is rather small in size and bookings are absolutely essential. Another factor to remember is that Firefly only accepts cash as payment. (no credit cards).

Go for a 30 minute drive from Knysna you will find a home based restaurant called Serendipity in the town of the Wilderness. This restaurant run by a wonderful couple by name of Rudolf and Lizelle Stolze has to be one of the finest restaurants in South Africa. The service in this restaurant as well as the quality of the food it out of the top drawer and value for money is unbeatable when you measure the quality that you receive relative to price. The setting of the restaurant is in a guesthouse owned by Lizelle’s parents and it is located on the Wilderness Lagoon. Lizelle specialises in her own reciped meals and always has one of her own designed local type meals on her menu. She was the dux student when she trained at the Prue Leith Academy of Food and Wine and has also been a lecturer at this academy.

I have been dining at this restaurant for the past 8 years and where Serendipity used to be a special secret of mine it has now risen to a level of if you do not book a week in advance you wont attain a reservation in the restaurant.

This has to be one of the great dining experiences in South Africa, let alone in Knysna.

So there you go Marwanie1 – Two very very special places to dine at in Knysna and just outside of Knysna.

Hope this has your taste buds swelling. (-J

Hi Selwyn

Serendipity is closed unfortunately during our stay. :( Is there anything else similar (in Wilderness would be good, but Knysna itself is okay too)?

Thanks

Marwanie1,

Pity about Serendipity.

There are quite a number of restaurants in Knysna and a couple in the Wilderness but in my opinion it is very difficult to find restaurants that are equivalent to Serenedipity or Firefly.

I had dinner at Zackarys (at Pezula) about 5 weeks ago and I found it to be ludicrously expensive. The food and service was good but it did not come near to the price that was charged.

I have been to Lush on a couple of occasions (Http://www.lushknysna.co.za/). The service and food at this restaurant is good and reliable. Furthermore it is a restaurant that is worth visiting so if Serendipity is closed this is where I would suggest you should go.

You could also look into going to Danielas which is a restaurant at Leisure Isle Lodge. http://www.leisureislelodge.co.za/ This is a wonderful restaurant however they first cater for the guests at leisure isle lodge and then take on outsiders. They have no spare tables if all their residents dine in the restaurant. Thus one can only book on the day that you want to dine at the establishment. Danielas food is wonderful and I do believe it is worth the effort to try and book on the day and hope for the best.

Hope this helps.

Selwyn I have just read about Firefly, thanks for the recommendation! We will certainly add that to our places we must eat at. For mid Nov how far in advance would you think we should book it? Em x

Emma,

I ate at Firefly 2 nights ago and as per normal Dell and Sancha outdid themselves with some wonderful new aromatic additions to their menu. My visitors absolutely raved about what turned out to be a brilliant evening.

Dell told me that her season bookings were doing ptetty well so I would say the sooner you book the better it is. I also would not try and book less than 2 weeks in advance as you could come out dissapointed.

Hope this helps you in your planning and that you have a great stay in South Africa as well as on the Garden Route.

Try Chatters Bistro on Grey St. They mainly do pizzas, pastas and burgers and provide super home-made dishes with plenty of toppings. The place is very heavily supported by the locals, which must say something. Their wine list is extensive; over 50 wines with the option to try 19 of them by the glass. I don't know anywhere else in South Africa, let alone Knysna that provides this option.
